Joseph Gordon-Levitt Won’t Be Returning For The G.I. Joe Sequel

Hey, they’re letting me talk about G.I. Joe again! The first film fell flat with critics, but it won over its share of fans and eventually went on to earn a worldwide box office total of more than $300 million. Even the movie’s defenders admit that’s it’s not a perfect movie, simply fun. One of its more imperfect features is the treatment of Cobra Commander. For all of Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s considerable talents, he still couldn’t make the lousy writing on that character work, not on any level.

That’s probably a big part of the reason why Gordon-Levitt won’t be back. He said so himself in a recent interview with Collider. You can go check out the video at the source, but his response is brief and to the point: “No.”

The previous film’s ensemble is reportedly being scaled back for the sequel, with only Channing Tatum (Duke), Ray Park (Snake-Eyes) and Byung-hun Lee (Storm Shadow) confirmed to be returning. Unless the movie, which is said to bear the subtitle Cobra Strikes, turns out to be some kind of smaller-scale spinoff, it seems reasonable to think that some key roles may be re-cast. It’ll be great to see some additional characters introduced, but it’s hard to imagine Cobra without Destro or Cobra Commander. There’s also a fairly huge dangling plot thread left over from the first movie involving Zartan.

Beyond them, however, bring on the new blood! Starting with Tomax and Xamot …

Didi you mean “it’s hard to imagine Cobra *without* Destro or Cobra Commander?” I didn’t see the first film, so I don’t know. I am enjoying the first season of the cartoon, er, animated series on HUB, though.

I watched it, Destro and Cobra Commander were the only good parts from the film, and even that is a stretch I’m kinda glad he isn’t coming back

He barely did anything in the first movie. He was mostly background.

Jospeh Gordon-Levitt not returning…not much of a surprise. I think they’ll either recast the role or introduce a new Cobra Commander.

Gordon-Levitt was absolutely crap in the first film – he overacted like he was in a London Pantomine. The writing and direction were pretty shocking as well, but that doesn’t excuse an actor from giving a poor performance.

He’s a talented actor, but his performance, like many of his costars in the film were only passable, and irrelevant. Just recast him and everyone else – in fact reboot the whole thing.

Oops, yes. Without. WITHOUT. Small typo. Those are the worst. I’ll fix it right away.

I would like to see the film more reflect the Sunbow series, with some contemporary changes. Snake Eyes’ costume DOESN’T need lips. Cobra Commander should most diffidently resemble the 80′s version (perhaps black uniform not blue). Destro is a must! Zartan also. I would like a revamp of the franchise. Grit is needed.

Levitt must have been smart enough to bail when he could. Take a hint. Let this version of the franchise die.

There are some excellent Japanese action figures (12 inch) of Cobra Commander and Snake Eyes that absolutely prove your opinion – especially the Commander in the black trenchcoat/ red trenchcoat combination. As for Snake Eyes – i always preferred his original goggled look than the new one – looked more legitimate.
