INTERVIEW: DiDio & Lee on "Dark Knight 3," Vertigo's Future & DC's Evolving Readership
The first day of shooting of The Dark Knight Rises on Friday was marked by the first leaked photos from the Jodhpur, India, set of the Christopher Nolan film. And what intriguing photos they are.
They reveal the crew setting up a green screen for a pool that fans have been quick to theorize is a Lazarus Pit, one of the restorative chemical pools used in DC comics by Ra’s al Ghul to prolong his life. Its inclusion in the movie wouldn’t be a big surprise, given that Jodhpur’s Mehrangar Fort already had been pegged for scenes involving the League of Shadows. It does, however, raise a couple of questions.
The first involves the (still unconfirmed) casting of Josh Pence as a young Ra’s al Ghul for what the initial report contended will be a flashback sequence set 30 years in the past. ComingSoon picked up on word that Pence had been spotted on the Jodhpur set, which could mean that the scene could involve, I don’t know, him emerging from the Lazarus Pit to learn about the birth of his daughter — or, well, any number of other scenarios.
But if Pence and the Lazarus Pit are there, what’s Christian Bale doing in Jodhpur? Granted, the newspaper report could be wrong about Bale. Or Mehrangar Fort could be used for two different scenes, one in the present with Batman/Bruce Wayne and the other three decades earlier with a young Ra’s. However, there’s always a possibility that the “flashback sequence” is one of Nolan’s famed misdirections, and that Pence’s scenes take place in the present, thanks to the rejuvenating properties of the Lazarus Pit. Just a thought.
The Dark Knight Rises so far stars Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine. Juno Temple, Josh Pence, Nestor Carbonell and Daniel Sunjata are also reported to be part of the ensemble. It opens on July 20, 2012.
