More Photos, Potential Plot Details Leak From Dark Knight Rises Set

The Dark Knight Rises has wrapped its India location shoot, with director Christopher Nolan and actors Christian Bale and Josh Pence returning to England on Monday, leaving a trail of questions behind them. Warning: Potential spoilers follow.

Seemingly confirming speculation sparked last week by grainy photos snapped at the movie’s Jodhpur set, The Times of India contends the “30 ft x 30 ft green screen will be digitally modified to create the Lazarus Pit,” a restorative chemical pool used in DC comics by Ra’s al Ghul to prolong his life. The question, however, is who goes into, or comes out of, the pit.

On a Facebook group called the Official The Dark Knight Rises Community, where the India set photos and numerous rumors have cropped up, member Lester Fernandes trumpets “the plot leak you’ve been waiting for”: Eyewitnesses and crew members purportedly say that, in one scene, “a bald-headed child wearing ragged clothes emerges from the well and pulls his hood over his head.”

“From the conversations, we reckon this is a young Bane, emerging from a vat of Venom, trained by Pence’s Ra’s al Ghul,” Fernandes theorizes, referring to the fictional strength-enhancing super-steroid that provides the source of Bane’s power. The training aspect is seemingly supported by a photo by Mehul Gohil of a courtyard at Jodhpur’s Mehrangar Fort identified as a “training arena” (shown at right).

However, The Times reports there were scenes shot of “Bale being carried into the pit and then jumping out of it.”

It’s certainly possible both accounts are accurate, with the “young Bane” scene taking place in flashback, thus explaining the presence of Pence — shown on location in the first photo below — as a younger Ra’s al Ghul. Bale could be placed in the pit in the present, perhaps after a back-breaking showdown with the adult Bane (Tom Hardy). Of course, that would certainly mean the pool is the Lazarus Pit and not, as Fernandes suggests, a vat of Venom. Or else, the vat and the pit are entirely different locations.

The Dark Knight Rises so far stars Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Josh Pence, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine. Juno Temple, Nestor Carbonell and Daniel Sunjata are also reported to be part of the ensemble. It opens on July 20, 2012.

i wonder…instead of Bane breaking the Bats back, he kills him and Bats is resurrected using the pit.

Taking this with pinches of salt, but the idea of the raggedy child/ bane scene sounds really cool.

What I wouldn’t give to see Nestor Carbonell portraying Bat-Manuel in this movie…

  • Brett

This looks really good. I haven’t been reading many of the spoilers but is Ra’s al ghul in this movie?

  • Kevin Melrose

Josh Pence is reportedly playing a young Ra’s al Ghul in a flashback sequence.

How does the idea of a Lazarus pit fit in with Nolan’s real world take on Batman? Is it not too supernatural?

  • Unique Jenique

I really don’t understand why Lazarus’ Pit would be in Nolan’s recreation of Batman. His characters are more “realistic” and the Pit fits in with the “supernatural.” That is why I loved his take on the films in the first place. I don’t know. I just want more detail, I guess.

  • Barge

That is exactly my sentiment. I don’t see how it could fit in with the established logic of the series. However, he is the genius filmmaker and I am but a lowly peasant, nor does it mean or do I think it would make the film worse (or better). Just seems like an odd choice given what has preceded.

Does any one really think Chris Nolan would actually use lazarus pit? It is so against the style of his Batman films. Rumours are rumours. I’m still hoping Hugo Strange is in this but it is just a rumour and there is no evidence to support this, Talia Ghul or anything else. For that matter has Warner Brothers even confirmed Josh Pence is Ras Al Ghul? I don’t think so.

  • Stephen Roberts

I definately agree. No more Lazarus Pit rumours please!

  • Scott

i dont think dat the pit will be used for resurrecting people because Nolan’s version of batman is based on realism i’d say the pit will show a young Bane being baptised by Ra’s al Ghul becoming a member of the league of shadows

  • Scott

I think the idea of the Lazarus Pit being able to resurrect people does not fit into Nolan’s real take on the character, I’d say the film will probably open up with a young bane being baptized by Ra’s in the pit as he becomes part of the League of Shadows. The film might have it as if Bane saw Ra’s as a father figure and wants revenge on Batman.

  • Riddle me this…

I think Nolan will set Bane up as “What if Bruce Wayne stayed with the League of Shadows?”. The well could be the Bane equivalent of young Bruce falling down the well at Wayne Manor, Ra’s finds Bane and brings him up to be in the League. Then again, if that’s how it is surely Bane would have been in Batman Begins? As for the Lazarus pit and Bruce being magically healed, I can’t see it happening, BUT I do think Bane will break the Bat which tees up The Dark Knight Rises, (Gotham falls into anarchy etc while he’s healing).

Not likely to be a Lazarus Pit or a Venom Pit. Too unrealistic for Nolan.

And enough with the “Bane breaks Batman’s back” talk. That’s just rabid fanboy talk, and unlikely to happen. If anything, Ra’s crashing on the train in BB, and Batman tackling Two-Face off the building in TDK, seems to indicate to me than Bane will most likely get indirectly “killed” by Batman one way or another in TDKR. After all, it’s improbable that Nolan is going to kill off Catwoman.

    Speaking of which…

Catwoman is the main villain. She plots the demise of all her enemies, blaming Batman for the downfall of her father, Carmine Falcone, and her deprived childhood causing her to start scheming for the demise of Gotham (by flirting with Bruce Wayne and trying to bring down Wayne Enterprises) and that of the Batman, whom she views as a threat and her biggest obstacle.

Bane is a young ninja in the League of Shadows, and begins investigating after Catwoman deceives the current leader for her own ends, and is out for revenge. He and Batman are initially enemies, but after a while unveil the threat by Catwoman to both of them and those things they care about. They team up and stop the Evil Kitty-Cat.

This is probably the most unrealistic thing that could happen in TDKR, but it would make for one hell of a plot twist. I have yet to see an incarnation of Catwoman that portrays her on par with such psychos as Scarecrow and the Joker.

is it possible that the pit is for levitz to be  a young jason todd coming back as the red hood? becuz bane killt him as a human and he comes back scarred?
