Vaughan & Chiang's "Paper Girls" Builds a Familiar Yet Disconcerting World
We haven’t heard a lot about the story in Real Steel, other than it follows a father and son’s work managing a fighter in a robot fighting league. As today’s trailer reveals, there’s a good reason the story hasn’t been elaborated on more than that. Putting “An ex-boxer trains a sparring robot in the Sweet Science” into a press release would get this movie laughed right out of Hollywood. Showing, not telling, proved to be the right move in this case.
The Real Steel trailer that debuted today offers a look at the basic story as well as the movie’s many robots. Also, stars Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly, Anthony Mackie (briefly) and Dakota Goyo (the kid). Shawn Levy, the guy who did the Night at the Museum movies, directed this one. It looks a bit more serious, kind of like a robot Rocky. Which is a bizarrely cool concept when you think about it. The movie hits theaters on Oct. 7, and I’m definitely game to check it out now.
