Universal Options "The Wicked + The Divine" for TV Adaptation
Ethan Hawke has joined the cast of Len Wiseman’s Total Recall remake. The specific role is being kept quiet since it amounts to little more than a cameo, The Hollywood Reporter reveals. Hawke joins Colin Farrell, who plays Douglas Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger’s part in the 1990 original), and Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston as the villain. Kate Beckinsdale and Jessica Biel are in negotiations for the two female leads.
THR offers up a synopsis of the Kurt Wimmer-penned story, which seems to depart significantly from both the earlier Paul Verhoeven-directed film and the Philip K. Dick story We Can Remember It For You Wholesale that inspired it: “The new story ditches the Martian storyline and instead involves nation states Euromerica and New Shanghai, with Douglas Quaid (Farrell) a factory worker in the latter who begins to believe he is a spy, although he doesn’t know for which side.”
This leaves me … confused. I remember when this remake was announced, a big deal was made of how it will honor the source. As anyone who has read the Dick story knows, the above synopsis seems to wander further from the source than the Arnold Schwarzenegger flick did. Why are we calling this Total Recall at all, Hollywood?
