Charles Xavier Outs Hank McCoy In New Clip From X-Men: First Class

Yahoo! Movies has premiered a second clip from X-Men: First Class, featuring the first meeting between CIA scientist Hank McCoy (Nicholas Hoult) and Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), Erik Lensherr (Michael Fassbender) and a smitten Raven Darkholme (Jennifer Lawrence). Like the first clip, this one also includes Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggart and Oliver Platt as the Man in Black.

Directed by Matthew Vaughn, the 20th Century Fox film also stars January Jones as Emma Frost, Lucas Till as Alex Summers/Havok, Caleb Landry Jones as Sean Cassidy/Banshee, Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw, Edi Gathegi as Darwin, Jason Flemyng as Azazel and Zoe Kravitz as Angel Salvadore. X-Men: First Class opens on June 3.

X-Men: First Class charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga, and reveals a secret history of famous global events. Before mutants had revealed themselves to the world, and before Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Not archenemies, they were instead at first the closest of friends, working together with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to prevent nuclear Armageddon. In the process, a grave rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men.

Okay, so Xavier read Hanks mind in order to find out he was mutant, but didn’t bother to read Hank’s mind enough to figure out whether or not it was polite to out him?  Tsk, tsk.

Well, at least they got that Xavier was a Jerk right. :)

My issue was that he didn’t bother to check and see if people knew. Outing him would have never been polite.

  • kalorama

He didn’t necessarily have to actually read his thoughts to know he was a mutant. Cerebro works on the principle that mutant brainwaves are different than normal people. Since all it really does is amplify Xavier’s natural abilities, it seems reasonable that he’d be able to sense someone was a mutant at close range without it.

As for outing him, it seemed pretty clear in that scene that Platt’s character new Xavier and the others were mutants and was helping them, so he likely wouldn’t care if Hank was a mutant (which would be why Xavier assumed he knew). So yeah, it was a faux pas on Xavier’s part but not exactly a major dick move, as it likely had no real negative consequences.

I know! – He was great in Skins!

Charles Xavier is a dick, this is a fact.

  • Anonymous

Sounded more naive than mean to me. But I suspect he’ll grow out of it by the end of the film.

  • WW3

So Xavier isn’t much older than McCoy? And btw that’s a very slim and un-beasty Hank McCoy.

  • Red Robin

If he can sense Hank’s brainwaves, he’s essentially reading his mind as he be using his power to examine Hank.  Also, according to Xavier in films and comics, he needs to concentrate hard to examine a person’s brainwaves, as that requires a more detailed and subtle approach.  Reading minds is easier because it’s like someone talking in your ear, so he has to work to tune it out.  Reading brain waves is like reading small print from a distance away.

I never said it was intentionally mean spirited or anything.  But it is inconsiderate and rude on Xavier’s behalf.  I mean, he was being very presumptuous to state “oh you’re a mutant” without giving Henry the option to exposing it himself or whether he wanted to keep that as his own business.  One would think a man as educated as Xavier would know better than to expose other people’s personal stuff, without making sure they were okay with talk about it.

  • Red Robin

Well, that’s kinda what I mean.  He read Beast’s mind and found out he was a mutant.  If he was going to cross that line of privacy he might as well have gone whole hog, and found out whether or not Hank had told anyone else.

  • Red Robin

Not always.  Depends on the writer.  This time however…
