Titanic 3D Re-release Hits Theaters On April 6, 2012

We all knew this was coming. It was revealed in October that James Cameron’s Titanic, the second-highest grossing domestic release ever, after Avatar, was getting a 3D makeover for an April 2012 release. Now you can narrow that broad window down to a single day: April 6. Plan accordingly, whether that involves dressing in period garb and setting sail for your local theater or letting loose an exasperated sigh and going back to the dark, musty depths of your lady-less man-cave.

The date of the release is actually pretty obvious when you think about it, since it coincides with the week of Titanic’s centennial anniversary (the ship sailed on April 10, 1912). This release marks the first time the movie will be seen in 3D, a conversion process that has probably had more money poured into it than the entire Clash of the Titans budget. Or not, but that was an easy shot to take.

Titanic is one of only three films to have earned 11 Academy Awards, and the second to earn that distinction; the other two are Ben-Hur and The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. Cameron is predictably overjoyed to be sharing this news, and he explains why this re-release is happening in a statement.

“There’s a whole generation that’s never seen Titanic as it was meant to be seen, on the big screen,” he said. “And this will be Titanic as you’ve never seen it before, digitally re-mastered at 4K and painstakingly converted to 3D. With the emotional power intact and the images more powerful than ever, this will be an epic experience for fans and newcomers alike.”

I’ll admit, I’ve never really had a great love for this movie. A 4K re-master and 3D conversion, though? Sold.

I wonder if this rerelease will push it’s box office earnings over Avatar‘s…

Definitely not the first time, won’t be the last. I’m a sucker for a good spectacle. Or a bad one. I’m expecting the latter here, but at least my eyes will be fed some sweet, sweet candy.

Weew, I’m sure many of us are excited to see this hall-of-fame movie in 3D next year! The romantic but tragic movie that wowed the world is back! I’m sure Leonardo and Kate will make everyone fall in love again.
