The Hobbit Adds Sherlock Star Benedict Cumberbatch
While many of you probably know Martin Freeman from Hot Fuzz and Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, he’s also impressed quite a few people with his starring role as Dr. John Watson in the BBC’s modern-day Sherlock Holmes reinterpretation Sherlock. He’s joined in the miniseries by Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays the titular detective. Now Freeman has confirmed — accidentally — that his Sherlock co-star will soon be winging his way to New Zealand for a role in The Hobbit.
Freeman caught himself before he revealed any specifics on the part Cumberbatch will play in a backstage interview with a BBC reporter at last night’s British TV Awards. “I knew I was a sort of a big mouth but I didn’t realize to what extent I was a big mouth, and I’ve just ruined everything,” he said upon realizing the mistake. “I might not actually go back to a job — they might have just sacked me.”
Cumberbatch stayed silent. So … let the speculation commence!
