Magneto, Hellfire Club Break Bad In Latest X-Men: First Class Clips

Twentieth Century Fox has unleashed a wave of new clips from X-Men: First Class that puts the spotlight on the villainous Hellfire Club — Sebastian Shaw, Emma Frost, Azazel and Riptide — and Magneto, as he oh-so-dramatically drifts further away from Charles Xavier’s utopian dream. Banshee gets a little more screen time, too.

Particularly impressive is the clip in which Shaw (Kevin Bacon), Azazel (Jason Flemyng) and Riptide (Alex Gonzalez) make short work of heavily armed CIA agents as they break into a government facility to have a chat with Xavier’s young mutants. Somewhat less impressive is the Emma Fost sequence, primarily because of January Jones’ delivery. The Mad Men actress certainly looks the part, but I’m not so sure she possesses the gravitas.

Directed by Matthew Vaughn, X-Men: First Class stars James McAvoy as Charles Xavier, Michael Fassbender as Erik Lensherr, Nicholas Hoult as Hank McCoy, Jennifer Lawrence as Raven Darkholme, January Jones as Emma Frost, Lucas Till as Alex Summers, Caleb Landry Jones as Sean Cassidy, Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw, Edi Gathegi as Darwin, Oliver Platt as the Man in Black, Jason Flemyng as Azazel, Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggart and Zoe Kravitz as Angel Salvadore. It opens on June 3.

Wasn’t it part of the plot that Xavier didn’t know about Magneto’s helmet at the start of X-Men 1? I guess they’re ignoring that? Other than that this looks really good.

  • Michael Sacal

General Lane is going to get those mutants.

  • Fhjkfe

I feel like they are showing an awful lot of this movie in bits and pieces. Doesn’t anyone want to be surprised any more?

  • tom

Worry not about January Jones, she’s brilliant in the film.

  • tom

I know what you mean. But fortunately just about every scene in this film is interesting enough to be released as a clip. (And they can’t exactly release all of them.)

edit – although, ahem, that last one is ridiculously close to the end…

  • Guydc3

So is Alex Summers now Scott Summers father in movie continuity. No longer his brother?

  • Logan’s Midnight Runner!

It’s being said this movie is part prequel part reboot like J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek, so maybe that falls under the reboot area?

  • Lion_okitkat

I agree. Its starting to be to much. I feel like I won’t be surprised when I see this movie. But I’m still excited. LOL. Will just have to avoid as many advanced clips as possible.

  • tom

Their dad might be really really old.

  • Red Robin

Actually, they never said if the helmet protects Magneto’s mind in the clips.  So the helmet may be purely ornamental at this point.

  • Michael Sacal

Her delivery is, like, hollow, lifeless. I don’t know what it is, but there’s something off with her.

  • Michael Sacal

Do we know for a fact that this Alex Summer is Havok? Could he not be like a grandfather for whom Alex is named after?

It could be a Henry James Olsen situation like in Smallville.

How about Emma Frost being in this movie after she already appeared in Wolverine? WTH?

  • kalorama

Xavier never said he didn’t know about Magneto’s helmet in X-Men. He told Wolverine, whom he’d basically just met, that he couldn’t locate Magneto with Cerebro because he had some way to block Xavier’s scanning. He never said he didn’t know how he was doing it; he just didn’t give Logan all the details.

And after Magneto kidnapped Rogue, Xavier specifically said that the helmet kept him from learning Magneto’s real plan before it was too late. So he clearly knew the helmet was the source of the blocking, and since he and Magneto never talked about it during the film (and since he couldn’t have read Magneto’s mind to find out the helmet was keeping him from reading Magneto’s mind) Xavier had to have had prior knowledge of what the helmet did.

  • Invasionforce

I liked Jones’ scene.  She was behaving in deadpan way, just as Emma would.  Those guys behind the one way glass did not know that she could “hear” their thougts.

  • seche

in the xbooks emma frost is very emotionally detached aka has shown very little emotion, though i agree with you that she looked off in the clip

  • Lead_sharp

Agree (again) think I’m on the don’t want to see any more list now.

You should see January Jones’ other work. She always comes off as “hollow and lifeless.” It’s just that in this case it sort of works out.

  • Michael Sacal

I have seen it, and it’s a turn off. It’s defleating.

  • J. Basilisk

This movie is lookin hot its sucks being based off of the comic but as a film of its own, its hot!!! Although I sitll think Cyclops, Jean Grey and Storm should be in it.

  • Michael Sacal

When I see the X-Men in this movie, I think back to Cyclops’ remark to Wolverine in the first one about yellow spandex.

If he only knew what Charles wore in his youth…

  • Michael Sacal

How much emotion could we say she demonstrated in X-Men Origins: Wolverine?

  • Spidey

Eh, the acting is really bad…but the action looks great! I’m still excited,

  • Red Robin

Yes, we do know that this Alex Summers is Havok.  They have the same name, powers and codename.  The director and crew and actor have all confirmed that he’s Havok.  The only difference between the movie and the comics is that Havok is not Cyclops brother, but that he will be related to Cyclops in some manner.  The director has also stated that he doesn’t give a damn about comic and movie continuity which explains all the glaring continuity errors from both franchises.

Besides, in these movies it has never been stated that Cyclops has a bother.  In this continuity he could be an only child.

  • Red Robin

I’m betting Havok an uncle rather than a father and that he’s estranged from his Cyclops father, which would explain why Xavier didn’t already pick up Cyclops prior to the events of X-Men origins.

  • Michael Sacal

Havok and Cyclops’ father is supposed to be out in space or something, no?

  • stealthwise

Man, these are terrible clips.  Bacon and Jones are just hamming it up, but not in the fun way.

  • Royce Earnest

Wow, I thought they looked really good. and people, keep in mind this movie is a completely different continuity than the comics or the Wolverine movie. Maybe even the other X-Men movies

  • Faust

Great to finally see some January Jones, Emma – And while there isn’t much emotion here – it is only a 40 second clip – and it looks like shes meant to be coming off as rather cold to her ‘jailers’. So we’ll see…. but I do have high hopes for her! ;)

Let me rephrase what you just said:
“xavier had to know what the helmet was diong before the movies, because there is no way he could have figured it out in the movies”.

I think a 3 year old girl could figure out it’s because of the helmet.
