Isaiah Mustafa Proves He’s Perfect For The Role Of Luke Cage

We all knew it — “we all” being comic book fans — the first time we saw him in those Old Spice commercials: Isaiah Mustafa is the real-world spitting image of Marvel’s Luke Cage. Lucky for us then that he magically managed to leverage Internet celebrity and eventually actual acting work from his well-received (and fresh smelling!) ad campaign.

Mustafa revealed last month that he’s actually met with Marvel and discussed the possibility of playing Luke Cage in a long-promised movie. He expressed that he’s a fan and that this is his most sought-after role. Even if it’s not true, it’s a smart thing to say given how popular the comic book adaptations are these days.

Well, now Mustafa has officially taken his interest in Cage to the next level, with a proof-of-concept trailer that shows just what he’d look like as Marvel’s Hero for Hire.

I that part with him punching through the door.  Pretty sweet.

not too bad at all. he’s gotta shave the head though. wasn’t tyrese attached to this role for the longest time as well?

Give him the part! He needs to beef up a little more for the role, but being a football guy I’m sure that wouldn’t be a problem for him.

Here’s another video of Isaiah playing Luke Cage (and an official Marvel video, at that!):

I love the use of the Thor sounds and music

i think it has potential but is far from what it needs to be. He shows like no emotion other than when he is having the experiment done to him. He would need to put on a lot of muscle and adjust his attitude to really nail Luke Cage. Sad thing is if a movie does ever get made i bet you anything they will get Dwayne Johnson the former Rock for the role rather than Mustafa just because of his celebrity status and physique.

  • kalorama

Not especially impressive really. He didn’t do much except pose and glower a lot. Still don’t know if he can actually act.

i don’t think he’d be good enough. if the ads and one Chuck appearance mean anything, he’s not much of an actor. and i don’t know, it doesn’t seem like a right fit. i know he used to be a football player, but i haven’t seen any genuine toughness in his roles. not grisly enough either.

I wasn’t too impressed with this at all really :/.

  • Jmcreer

Hadn’t thought of the Rock but I’d see it if he was starring (he at least has the acting chops).

“the world will know me as Luke Cage…not the Old Spice Guy…”

  • Jacob

    Two Chuck appearances.

With Marvel behind the movie, I don’t think they’d cast Johnson. They would at least cast someone who looked the part.

if you take away the immense “build” of Luke Cage..( this old spice guy is too trim & slender)

If you take away the headband or any yellow costume of anykind.

If you just make him an angry black guy with super strength….. than LUKE CAGE is just a weak HANCOCK and nothing special AT ALL.

  • Drhiphop85

Wow that shows a very simplified understanding of the character. I’m not sure this is the place to discuss the significance of the character when he was created and the even more significance he’s gained in recent months. But I will say that if he had a movie that was done right, it would be a great thing to show that black guys can have emotions without being “angry black guy”…

  • Jmcreer

I think that’s his point – it was exactly what I was thinking, “this isn’t Luke Cage, just a generic angry black guy.”  The video doesn’t highlight the uniqueness of the Luke Cage character.

    Terry Crews IS Luke cage!
