A Six-Minute Clip, And Downplayed Expectations, For Abrams’ Super 8

MSN Movies has premiered a six-minute clip from Super 8, the heavily promoted, but highly mysterious, sci-fi thriller from writer/director J.J. Abrams and executive producer Steven Spielberg.

While the combination of those two names would seem like a recipe for a summer blockbuster, Paramount Pictures is downplaying expectations, insisting that the $50-million doesn’t really need a big opening weekend. According to The Hollywood Reporter, executives estimate Super 8, which premieres on Friday, will gross between $25 million and $30 million in its first weekend.

Vulture, points, points to tracking data and wonders whether Super 8 will be a box-office disappointment. It seems that only about 64 percent of respondents were even aware of the movie, and just 36 expressed ““definite interest” in watching it. Still, an unnamed expert predicts the film will take in $30 million this weekend — on the upper end of Paramount’s estimate. So even if Super 8 is a “disappointment” by Vulture’s standards, it looks as if the studio will be pleased.

Super 8 stars Kyle Chandler, Elle Fanning, Amanda Michalka, Joel Courtney, Gabriel Basso, Noah Emmerich and Ron Eldard.

  • WhatHuh?

This movie will do better than expected because the families that want to watch a movie will pick this over Green Lantern due to this movie being 2D and not 3D. That doesn’t mean that it is the sole reason why it will do better, but it will be a big factor to it.

the entire line of thought where if the film doesn’t make a hundred mil on opening weekend its a failure is the biggest display of Ignorance there is. It makes more sense to have a strong weekend, Like X-MEN had, but then to have good enough word of mouth to give it legs.

The amount of money a film makes in its opening weekend, in no way speaks of the films quality.
