Star Wars Live-Action Series On Hold, Charts Growth Of Empire

Hope flared up briefly a few weeks ago when George Lucas mentioned Star Wars, “live-action” and “TV series” in the same interview, but those hopes were soon dashed when it became clear that it’ll be a while yet before there’s any movement on the long-hoped-for Star Wars live-action TV series. Now Lucas associate Rick McCallum has chimed in with a few words of his own on the series, and it continues to be what we don’t want to hear.

“The TV series is on hold, but that has nothing to do with the Czech Republic; it has to do with [the episodes being] so ambitious,” he said in an interview with Czech Position (via ComingSoon). Upcoming Lucasfilm release Red Tails filmed in the Czech Republic, which is what brought McCallum to the interview in the first place.

“We have 50 hours of third-draft scripts, but the problem we have is there is a lot of digital animation; we don’t have the technology yet to be able to do them at a price that is safe for television. Since we would be financing them, it would be suicide for us to do this [now]. So we are going to wait three or four years.”

McCallum expressed some doubt about the possibility for a release even down the road, blaming the changing face of television and the huge popularity of reality TV series’. It’s not all bad news though. McCallum did lay out the arc of the series in broad strokes, and it sounds awesome.

“It takes place between episodes three and four, when Luke Skywalker was growing up as a teenager, but it has nothing to do with Luke,” he said. “Basically, it is like The Godfather; it’s the Empire slowly building up its power base around the galaxy, what happens in Coruscant, which is the major capital, and it’s [about] a group of underground bosses who live there and control drugs, prostitution.”

Special FX won’t make a better Star Wars.

Lucas seriously needs to get over the prequels. Give us some of the stuff that should have been in Episodes 7-9. Let’s see Luke Skywalker with a proper Jedi code name training the next generation of Jedi Knights. Let’s see the Empire’s attempts to rebuild, or bring a new threat to the Republic. Bottom line; let’s move forward instead of constantly looking back!

You know what…NO! No. I don’t care anymore. This was cool like five years ago but now, NO.
Honestly, they’ve been dangling this in front of people for years saying “Oh, it’s too expensive to put on.” and “We’ve got years worth of stories here and it’s gonna be incredible” but you can only say that for so long.

Rick McCallum and George Lucas can take all the time they want, but for now I’m gonna enjoy shows that don’t tell me how good something is and make me wait for it. I’ll watch a show that simply produces content.

Well personally I think it’s good that he might make a series which takes place between episode III and IV but personally I agree with say you Superby1 but only in some ways because if makes a series like star wars is gooding to be as expensive as George Lucas says it is then If I was Him I would not have said a word or pep about the show until it was made then come out and Say” Hey star wars fan and everyone guess what if you like the movie and the animated series called star wars the clone wars, then you’ll what i’m about to say I’ve created a series which looks at the peroid and events that happened between episode III and IV.”
