Idris Elba Confirmed To Star In Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim

Idris Elba has landed the lead role originally developed for Tom Cruise in director Guillermo del Toro’s giant-monster movie Pacific Rim, Deadline reports.

The Wire alum, who played Heimdall in Marvel’s Thor, joins Sons of Anarchy‘s Charlie Hunnam in the sci-fi action film, which is set in a future where giant creatures threaten to destroy the Earth, one city at a time. To save the planet, humanity must band together, using advanced weapons technology to eradicate the monstrous menace.

Elba, who’s busy shooting Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, emerged early this month as the favorite for the role of Sensei in the Legendary Pictures/Warner Bros. production. Travis Beacham (Clash of the Titans) wrote the screenplay; Legendary’s Jon Jashni and Thomas Tull are producing. Filming is set to begin in November.

I’m kinda hoping this is actually a Godzilla reboot, since it sounds like Godzilla vs Ultraman. Either way it sounds awesome.

I imagine that replacing Tom Cruise with Idris Elba would improve any movie.
