First Look At Martin Freeman And Ian McKellen In The Hobbit

Although we’ve been treated to a few behind-the-scenes photos from The Hobbit — most memorably a costumed Ian McKellen in 3D glasses, and the White Council at play — this morning Entertainment Weekly has the first official images from Peter Jackson’s two-movie adaptation.

Appropriately enough, they’re shots of stars Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins — He fits the ears, and he’s got some very nice feet,” the director says — and McKellen once again as Gandalf the Grey.

The two lead a sprawling ensemble cast that includes Richard Armitage, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Stephen Fry, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Sylvester McCoy, Bret McKenzie, Graham McTavish, Mike Mizrahi, James Nesbitt, Dean O’Gorman, Lee Pace, Mikael Persbrandt, Conan Stevens, Ken Stott, Jeffrey Thomas, Aidan Turner, Luke Evans, Benedict Cumberbatch, Evangeline Lilly, Barry Humphries, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood and Andy Serkis.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opens on Dec. 14, 2012, and The Hobbit: There and Back Again on Dec. 13, 2013.

Wow, I got that feeling. I didn’t expect that I was 13 when the first LOTR came out and Its all coming back

Still can’t get how they justify turning such a short book in to two movies.

Even if they actually show the battle of five armies or the white council driving out the necromancer (which will require a lot of invention on Jackson’s part) they would essentially be completely changing everything just to make the movie feel less like The Hobbit and more like LOTR

And adding in characters like Legolas?
    And forcing in 3D?

Despite some of the bigger changes made in the movie trilogy, I still got the impression that Jackson and his cast and crew were really trying to honor the source material.

This just seems like a dirty cash grab.

First off let me say that I enjoy seeing these pictures, I really cannot wait to see these on the screen, though I am not excited about it being in 3D because the glasses make movies look darker. I am really enjoying seeing the extended editions in theatres, as we saw The Two Towers Tuesday night and next Tuesday the Return of the King. My daughters had not seen these in theatres as they were too young, but now they are enjoying seeing these on the big screen. So whether it is a cash grab or not makes not difference, what makes me smile is seeing my daughters eyes glow as this movie unfolds on the big screen.

That being said, I disagree partially with Lackshmana in that I do not believe this is only being done simply for the money. Peter Jackson is excited as an artist of cinema to bring these stories to the big screen for fans of the book and those who have never sat down to read them. I have always loved the hobbit but felt like I wish tolkein would have gone back and wrote another book explaining what happened at the White Council and the Necromancer. So I look forward to seeing what Peter Jackson can conjure up story wise and seeing how he will connect this to the Lord of the Rings Trilogy making it almost be like a seemless story.

It’s exciting for me and my daughters are now reading the Hobbit on my iPad, very exciting indeed…

With all the additional material Tolkien had sitting around, fleshing it out into two movies shouldn’t be particularly difficult.

I still hope some of the Guillermo Del Toro did stays, especially creature designs etc. Freeman is perfect casting for Bilbo.
