Ben Affleck To Direct, Star In Argo

I didn’t love The Town but that didn’t stop it from getting an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. We learned two things from this: First, I need to work harder on forcing people to share my beliefs, and second, lots of people like it when Affleck directs and stars in something. Which brings us to the topic of the day, a movie called Argo.

The actor will direct and star in Argo as Tony Mendez (I’m going to use Variety‘s words on the subject here), “the CIA exfiltration expert who created a fake Hollywood production to get six Americans who were hiding out at the Canadian ambassador’s out of Iran.” It’s a true story, too.

Also in negotiations to join the cast are Alan Arkin and John Goodman, who would play Hollywood producer Lester Siegel and makeup artist John Chambers, respectively. George Clooney and Grant Heslov will produce through Smokehouse Pictures, along with David Klawans. The script comes from Chris Terrio, who adapted a 2007 article in Wired magazine detailing the real-life event.

The town was great. I think it’s amazing how much of a transition Affleck has made from someone whose movies I actively avoided to someone I now look out for. Love his direction, and good for him on getting better at his craft.
