"Batman's" Gotham Was... Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo
I didn’t have the strongly negative reaction to Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides that a lot of critics did … but it still needed some work. The box office sang a different song, of course, to the tune of more than $1 billion (and counting) worldwide, so a fifth movie is now in the works. And wouldn’t you know it, star Johnny Depp is “close” to setting sail once again, TheWrap has learned.
It’s a rumor for now, with no source actually named, but a rough draft of the script has apparently been submitted and producer Jerry Bruckheimer is working with a group now on tightening it up. Depp’s approval on the script is key, but TheWrap is reporting that “the broad strokes [are] in place for a deal with the lead actor.” Depp’s agent had no comment and Disney didn’t respond to a request for one.
I still stand by the conclusion I reached after seeing On Stranger Tides, that Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow is not the right guy to lead these movies (let Geoffrey Rush do it, dammit!). With more than $1 billion in the box office for the latest movie, also the first to put the weight of the story on Captain Jack’s shoulders, it’s a pretty safe bet that Depp will be front and center once again.
I don’t want to pre-judge something here, but … yawn.
