Johnny Depp Probably Returning For Pirates Of The Caribbean 5

I didn’t have the strongly negative reaction to Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides that a lot of critics did … but it still needed some work. The box office sang a different song, of course, to the tune of more than $1 billion (and counting) worldwide, so a fifth movie is now in the works. And wouldn’t you know it, star Johnny Depp is “close” to setting sail once again, TheWrap has learned.

It’s a rumor for now, with no source actually named, but a rough draft of the script has apparently been submitted and producer Jerry Bruckheimer is working with a group now on tightening it up. Depp’s approval on the script is key, but TheWrap is reporting that “the broad strokes [are] in place for a deal with the lead actor.” Depp’s agent had no comment and Disney didn’t respond to a request for one.

I still stand by the conclusion I reached after seeing On Stranger Tides, that Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow is not the right guy to lead these movies (let Geoffrey Rush do it, dammit!). With more than $1 billion in the box office for the latest movie, also the first to put the weight of the story on Captain Jack’s shoulders, it’s a pretty safe bet that Depp will be front and center once again.

I don’t want to pre-judge something here, but … yawn.

I saw the first three Pirates movies, I still have trouble loving the first one, but the second I really enjoyed and the third one was good except for the giant woman thing.

But for some reason I find it hard to get myself to the theatres to see this one and it is still showing strong in my area, maybe if this Tuesday coming up it is still there I will give it a go, who knows we’ll see.

But as for a fifth, well that would depend on how the 4th ended and if there really is a lot more to be told storywise or if we are stretching it out beyond what is capable.  And what is up with Orlando Blooms character returning along with his love.  I really would like to see the old crew back, that might make me go see it more…

How do you not love the first one? Its easily my favorite of all of them.

I’m one of the apparently few people who loved the three first movies – what can I say? I like my plots confusing -, and I really did enjoy the fourth one a lot.

Now, the idea of putting Geoffrey Rush as the main actor in the series? Completely unrealistic. We all know that the reason most people – or “mainstream audiences” as some might like to call them – watch these movies is Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow. In fact, after watching On Stranger Tides, I told some people about the idea of putting Barbossa as the main figure of the series and removing Jack and they all hated it. They watch these for Jack Sparrow.

Face it, the character has a cult following and is the driving force of the franchise. Not Will Turner, not Elizabeth Swann, not even Barbossa – it’s Jack’s world, they just appear in it.

The films have all been blockbusters dude – you’re in the majority, not the minority…

I don’t know I really need to sit down and watch all 3 again, seriously.  It may have been where I was at that time in my life.  But hey I have watched movies I thought were terrible years ago only to watch them again recently and like them a lot more than I originally thought.  I know that my opinion has been at odds with most people over the years LOL.
