Evil Dead Remake Script Coming From Juno’s Diablo Cody
This week has brought an embarrassment of riches for Evil Dead fans. It all started when Bruce Campbell told Twitter that it really was happening. Then we learned yesterday that newcomer Federico Alvarez will direct the remake. Finally, today brings word of the writer: none other than Juno Oscar winner Diablo Cody.
The news comes from a press release put out by Sam Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures. Raimi is producing with Campbell and Robert Tapert, his partners on the original. The initial script was written by Alvarez and Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues, with Cody now coming in to polish it up and make it purdy.
The release also notes that the remake is “on the fast track” and that Ghost House is “committed to renewing the franchise.” Might that mean Raimi & Co. have more in the works? Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The original producers may be back, but Alvarez is an unknown quantity and the fact that the script comes from him and a partner, with Cody re-writes, means that Raimi, the original’s writer/director, won’t actually be putting pen to page in any official capacity.
Which means that this remake really is remake, only a more credible one than usual since the original players appear to be closely involved. I don’t like remakes, but do I like Bruce Campbell. Cast that man, Alvarez. Force him to do it at gunpoint if you have to. Do that and I’ll be there, as I’m sure will be the case with many other fans.
