CCI | Andrew Garfield Wows Crowd With Moving Spider-Man Speech

CBR/Spinoff Online’s coverage of Comic-Con 2011 is brought to you by

While there was plenty of drama backstage Friday night at Sony’s Amazing Spider-Man presentation, inside Hall H it was an entirely different matter. There, star Andrew Garfield surprised the Comic-Con International audience by appearing at the Q&A microphone dressed in a store-bought Spider-Man costume.

But what at first seemed like a gag quickly transformed into something else, something incredibly moving, as the actor, breathless and his voice quivering, read a heartfelt speech to the crowd about what Spider-Man meant to him as a kid.

“Peter Parker has inspired me to feel stronger,” Garfield said. “He made me, Andrew, braver. He reassured me that by doing the right thing, it’s worth it, it’s worth the struggle, it’s worth the pain, it’s worth even the tears, the bruises and the blood. And I wouldn’t be able to stand here in front of you guys right now without feeling that Spider-Man was here with me, with his reassuring hand on my shoulder making sure I don’t fall over and concuss myself.”

It’s a moving video that, I confess, made me tear up a little. Watch it for yourself below.

Directed by Marc Webb, The Amazing Spider-Man also stars Rhys Ifans, Emma Stone, Martin Sheen, Sally Field, Irrfan Khan, Denis Leary, Chris Zylka, Campbell Scott, C. Thomas Howell, Julianne Nicholson and Annie Parisse. It opens July 3, 2012.

    That is so hot.

  • Hugo Sleestak

Fun speech, nice little stunt, but half the time I couldn’t figure out whether he was talking about Spider-Man or Jesus …

Did he run a marathon before taking the mic?

  • Dan Dieckmann

Does it matter? Both are characters from books written by other men, and if the stories of these characters inspire, that’s all that matters.

The cynic in me wants to know who wrote that for him.

  • Jacob

He ran to the mic. That, plus nerves, plus what he was saying, seemingly left him breathless.

His costume was missing the spider on the back. But he should have been wearing his suit.

That was so cute! He is a great choose, and it helps he looks a little nerdy too ;) And nice to see everyone cheering him even before they knew who it was! Great Support!

I hope the person they replace him with in 3 years is just as emotionally invested.

“I`m here because I`m a fan like you, and Spidey saved my life, and he`s great, and this is so cool. Also, me and the others earned millions of dollars doing it”.
