Tower Heist Trailer Is Actually Kinda Funny

If you were to tell me that a trailer for a Brett Ratner-directed movie starring Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy, Matthew Broderick, Casey Affleck, Michael Pena, Alan Alda and Gabourey Sidibe was worth watching, I’d laugh in your face. I guess it’s not so much the actors — questionable Stiller and Murphy moments in recent years aside, that’s a solid line-up — as it is Ratner, who will forever be “the guy who crapped all over X-Men: The Last Stand.”

Keep that in mind as you read these next words: Ratner’s Tower Heist looks like a hoot. It’s not the most imaginative title in the world, and I’d much rather see this movie’s original pitch (a “black Ocean’s 11“), but the hijinx that ensue in the newly released trailer are at the very least entertaining. Also, as someone who grew up watching Beverly Hills Cop and the ever-glorious The Golden Child, I’d really like to see Eddie Murphy be funny again.

I like the trailer, and will probably go see this. But I still cringe whenever I hear Eddie Murphy slather on his “street” voice. Funny 25-30 years ago, not so funny in more recent times.

    But that’s just me.

Ratner also did the Rush Hour movies, which were hilarious. (also, I enjoyed X3)

I second that. I actually use that line once in a while, and NOBODY knows what the hell I’m talking about. Thank you for validating my humor!

…I got to the part where Ben Stiller said he knew someone that knew how to steal and they showed the one black guy in jail and had to stop.  If it were any other film, I’d have rolled my eyes and let it go.  I’ve let things people found much more offensive go.  (Ape-controlled Africa?  Tad insulting, but whatever.  I knew what they meant.)

But, like you Adam, I was following this when it was supposed to be the “black Ocean’s 11″.  So to see it go from an interesting spin on an enjoyable movie to a kinda old stereotype is…well, it sucks.

Also–Eddie Murphy’s too old for that part.  Should’ve gotten someone younger.  More believable.  At his age he should be smarter about crimes, and hopefully more well-spoken.
