CBS Eyes Bewitched Remake

Risking an audience curse, CBS has ordered a script from Sony Pictures Television for a remake of the 1960s sitcom Bewitched.

Variety reports that Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher, the married producers of the widely panned 2005 film adaptation, will executive produce the pilot, written by Marc Lawrence (Miss Congeniality).

The original series, which aired from 1964 to 1971 on ABC, starred Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha, a witch who marries the mortal Darrin Stephens (Dick York and later Dick Sargent) and tries to adapt to life as a suburban housewife while struggling with her disapproving mother (Anges Moorehead) and extended magical family.

While Bewitched remakes have met with success in recent years in overseas markets, it will likely be a far tougher sell in the United States, where the show has aired regularly in syndication since the early ’70s. The cast, not the premise, was the strength of the original: By the fourth season, Bewitched had settled into routine plots that more often than not involved Endora magically sabotaging Darrin’s work at the advertising agency, or Aunt Clara’s powers misfiring (frequently sabotaging Darrin’s work at the advertising agency). But the series succeeded on the charm of Montgomery, the awkwardness and impotent fury of York and Sargent, the theatricality of Moorehead and the quirkiness (and campiness) of recurring guest stars like Bernard Fox, Paul Lynde, Alice Ghostly and Maurice Evans.

As further evidence of the importance of the original cast, look no further than the Nicole Kidman/Will Ferrell movie, which grossed $63 million domestically ($22 million less than the estimated production cost).

    Everything old is new again.

Mr. Melrose, before I even started reading the article it seems I was concerned about a couple of things that you mentioned.

To me, (watching Bewitched when it was doubled up in syndication and airing after Scooby-Doo), the success of the show was a result of the flat-out charm of Elizabeth Montgomery and the raw talent and charisma of Agnes Moorehead. And absolutely, the quirkiness of the supporting players you mentioned were a huge part of it…as was the good nature of Dick York (but not Dick Sargent).

If this idea ever makes it to series, I’m sure it will be like the new Hawaii 5-0…not even having any of the flavor or spirit of the original series, but creating it’s own identity for better or worse, to the point where it should actually be titled something different.

The “Bewitched” movied was such a flop because of its plot, not because of the cast. It wasn’t really based on the actual TV series. People wanted to see a movie based on Samantha, Endora, and Darrin, not some dumb story about someone making a movie based on the series.

Oh, and the new series will no doubt be so eaten up with political correctness as to not even be enjoyable.

It will most likely have all CGI that’s out of date in a week and cast that can not be warmed too, follow ups and spin offs (Tabitha 1977) are one thing, but remakes rarely make good viewing.
Love the original so please don’t ruin a classic .

I loved this series, and although I wasn’t alive when it was first broadcast – it was pretty much on the air through out my late 80′s, early 90′s, childhood.

The movie from a few years back was an absolute nightmare – why the hell they changed the basis premise of the series is beyond me! – But even if they didn’t, that movie still would of sucked. And now hearing that the people from that movie are still involved makes me think this series wont be any better! The writer Miss Congeniality?!? …oh god!

The sad thing is, with the amazing series Mad Men – we know the time period can still work well today.

Even if it was based on the real characters, I still wouldn’t have seen it with Nichole Kidman and Jim Carey. The same way I avoided the Honeymooners.

Truer words were never spoken. And if you want proof, the show was never the same after York left.

I think Jenny McCarthy is being hired for the role as samantha.

Wait until the new remake of the bewitched sitcom that will air on CBS. Jenny McCarthy will be playing samantha stephens role. I wonder if they will cast Betty White as aunt clara ?
