<i>The Hulk</i> TV Series Won’t Tie Into Marvel Films, Del Toro Says

Marvel delighted fans by crafting an interconnected cinematic universe peppered with Easter eggs and cameos, all building toward the release in May 2012 of The Avengers, which assembles the studio’s big-screen heroes to battle a major, yet till unrevealed, threat.

However, filmmaker Guillermo del Toro said audiences shouldn’t expect those threads to extend into television, where he’s developing The Hulk for ABC with Battlestar Galactica‘s David Eick.

“We had a long, long talk about that, and we’ve been given license,” del Toro tells MTV. “I mean, I think the comics, y’know  [...] Pak’s Hulk is great, and Loeb’s Hulk is great, and there’s so many things in the Hulk universe that are powerful strands of narrative. They know we are being faithful to those strands, and the movies have their own continuity.”

Reinforcing the update he offered in late June, del Toro says, “”David Eick and I are hard at work. “We’ve gone through a lot of iterations with the ABC project and we’re very happy where we are right now. We’re just waiting for the green light to go to pages.”

“The trick with The Hulk is, how do you accommodate the Hulk in a TV effects budget?” he continues. “We are finding ways around it. It’s a tricky one to figure out in the model, but if we are successful at that, then you can go into it.”

ABC President Paul Lee revealed over the weekend at the Television Critics Association press tour that the networks hopes to see The Hulk and AKA Jessica Jones, an adaptation of Marvel’s Alias, in the next pilot season. Live-action series Cloak & Dagger and Mockingbird are also in development at corporate sibling ABC Family.

Del Toro has revealed that he is drawing inspiration from both Stan Lee
and Jack Kirby’s original Hulk comics and writer Jeph Loeb’s recent run.

Be set before Bruce Banner went on the run, before people knew he was the Hulk and still working at Gamma Base New Mexico.

  • Michael McDonnell

Season One should be like Hulk:Gray because that dealt with the early
days of the Hulk before the world knew about Bruce Banner’s power and
his secret and a focus on the love story between Bruce and Betty Ross.

  • Michael McDonnell

Type your comment here.Bruce Banner to wear glasses in the new series as in the comics which makes him look like an adult Peter Parker.

Having the new series be a remake of the old series is a real problem it would just prevent the new series from creating it’s own identity and would just appeal to nostalgic douchebags not to a new generation.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-McDonnell/868645580 Michael McDonnell

TV Hulk is going to have the same design and CG model from the Avengers to cut costs but not the same actor.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-McDonnell/868645580 Michael McDonnell

Having a new cast is more likely because Del Toro and Eick would want to do their own creative blueprint and would be separating themselves from previous live action Hulk TV and movie adaptations.

Having a new cast is just a way to separate themselves from previous live action Hulk TV and movie adaptations.

  • Michael McDonnell

The pilot is said to be airing soon after The Avengers in the pilot season and first season in the Autumn.

  • Gilberto Edwards

I thing they should tie it two The Incredible Hulk 2008 movie Film with Edward Norton instead of another 4th actor.

  • Gilberto Edwards

Because The Incredible Hulk Movie in 2008 Film was far better than the rest of the two movie films like the Avengers 2012,and Hulk 2003 Film.

  • Gilberto Edwards

New Hulk TV Series in 2012 should be tie with the Incredible Hulk 2008 movie Film.

  • Gilberto Edwards

Guillermo Del toro needs to bend it to the The Incredible Hulk 2008 Film to The New Hulk TV Series 2012.

  • Gilberto Edwards

If Guillermo Del Toro bend The New Hulk TV Series to the Incredible Hulk 2008 Film with Edward Norton it will be a winner success.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-McDonnell/868645580 Michael McDonnell

If the series happens it is likely they’ll go with an entirely new cast.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-McDonnell/868645580 Michael McDonnell

Both Del Toro and Eick have a creative responsibility, if they want to
establish their own Hulk community on television Marvel would’ve gone
    along with it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-McDonnell/868645580 Michael McDonnell

I think having it more like the old series or continue on from the 2008 film would just prevent it from establishing it’s own identity, no matter how good or how loved the old series is or how good the 2008 film was it is necessary to moveforward like Chris Nolan’s Batman was completely different from Tim Burton’s films because he had a different conception on how he wanted to tell Batman’s story and how he wanted to present the character.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-McDonnell/868645580 Michael McDonnell

Lois & Clark wasn’t a continuation of the Christopher Reeve films and they didn’t use Christopher Reeve or Margot Kidder for the roles because the producers had a different approach to Superman and his supporting cast.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-McDonnell/868645580 Michael McDonnell

Del Toro said back in November that he delivered the pilot script to the network and now waiting for a greenlight, perhaps in the next few months we should be hearing news about a new hulk cast and plot details.

  • Gilberto Edwards

I will say that the continue were they left off will work and thats the truth because you have to understand about the script and it should be based on old TV Series and the 2008 Film.

  • Gilberto Edwards

The New Hulk TV Series should be based on The original old TV Series and The comic book including.

  • Gilberto Edwards

If they will go along with not only there own spin but like the original Television series too when he’s  moving from town to town.

  • Gilberto Edwards

It won’t be no body casting  for The New Hulk TV Series until The Avengers movies comes to the big screen with The Hulk.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-McDonnell/868645580 Michael McDonnell

It’s been 3 months since we had a update on the series and no 2012 updates yet.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-McDonnell/868645580 Michael McDonnell

The Avengers comes out in the US in May and in the UK in April but there’re alot of pilots being picked up now and The Hulk should be among them and Del Toro is busy with other projects.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-McDonnell/868645580 Michael McDonnell

The old series was 35 years ago there are things in it that wouldn’t work for today like him being chased by a reporter and Hulk fighting criminals week to week doesn’t quite work for science fiction shows for today.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-McDonnell/868645580 Michael McDonnell

The man on the run is fine as long as it doesn’t turn into a cheap knock off of the old series, they’re likely to have him chased by a elite military squad led by General Ross.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-McDonnell/868645580 Michael McDonnell

Del Toro has been busy with other projects like Pacific Rim and what about David Eick he’s in on it too and he is doing the Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome TV series.

  • Michael McDonnell

Moving forward with a new hulk cast on television is a tough but
necessary move, some people are afraid of that, some people may be
skeptical about a new Bruce Banner and Betty Ross, some people may be
open minded about it because there’ve alot of different interpretations
of the Hulk over the years.

  • Gilberto Edwards

Not michael shanks but Clay Akien as New Bruce Banner from Donald Trump celebrity appenrance in New Hulk live Action TV Series.

  • Gilberto Edwards

Maybe a person under a rubber green suit will work.

  • Gilberto Edwards

A New Cast for The New Incredible Hulk Series will be likely and have Lou Ferrigno voice the The Incredible Hulk like he did in the Avengers movie.

  • Gilberto Edwards

Not good storyline it should be about Bruce Banner got exposed from Gamma Radiation from the machine by using too much of it.

  • Gilberto Edwards

Not really only his own spin but like old TV Series with Bill Bixby version.

  • Gilberto Edwards

Or working on the Gamma rays with machine computer Lab as being accidental gamma radiation experiment were causes him to Hulk Out into a gaint green creature.

  • Gilberto Edwards

Not yet the gray Hulk in season one the Hulk will remain green after a gamma overdose.

  • Gilberto Edwards

It will not be a problem to remake the Hulk based on the old TV series because should not be based only on a comic book but orignal TV Series.

  • Gilberto Edwards

Not at all they be seperated from the orignal Hulk but based on classics TV Series will work with Lou Ferrigno involve as a camero and voice too.

  • Gilberto Edwards

It does”nt mean that the new cast will be horrible, its that they will cast a perfect Bruce Banner much better than mark ruffalo and Eric Bana,Clay akien as the New Bruce Banner will be perfect Bruce Banner in the New Hulk TV Series.

  • Gilberto Edwards

But don”t rush Jeph Leob on who to cast because he wants to make sure that that they cast right man for Bruce Banner.

  • Gilberto Edwards

Jeph Leob is trying to make a better storyline and creative casting to go with the New Hulk creation.

  • Gilberto Edwards

Because they need to take time to it right.

  • Gilberto Edwards

It should told little different than comic book about exposing himself with Gamma rays.

  • Gilberto Edwards

Don”t forget that the Hulk on the screen will not be CGI but mix with different special effects.

  • Michael McDonnell

They’re taking all the Marvel TV show slow to get them right, Loeb’s
answer in a update is always the same “we’re in development” they said
they were going for the 2012-13 season but now the pilot season has
ended they may say next year but then the next and the next.

  • Michael McDonnell

Kevin Feige said just recently there are no plans for another solo Hulk
movie so that probably means we’re getting Hulk TV in the next few years
with another Bruce Banner Betty Ross.

  • Michael McDonnell

Simplify the Hulk effects maybe the only solution because making a TV
series is not the same as making a movie because of time and budget
constraints. A green muscle suit would be Del Toro’s alley because he
likes practial and make up effects, would be like Hellboy were they put
Ron Perlman in a red muscle suit and make up, there was a Hulk suit in
the alternate ending of Scary Movie 3 but that was a comedic
representation of the character, a hulk suit would be like the Hellboy
make up or the Doomsday Smallville make up. Would be interesting if they
go that route have Banner and the Hulk be played by the same actor.

  • Michael McDonnell

The Avengers movie has created the possibility for a new Hulk movie, in
2015. They say if the Hulk success continues, Marvel will spin him off
to a stand alone TV series next year supported by a big budget franchise
    movie in 2015.

  • Michael McDonnell

I just heard that it maybe in develpment for 2013-14 season but Jessica Jones is stalled.

Because of the success of The Avengers they decideed to fast track it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-McDonnell/868645580 Michael McDonnell

Think with Del Toro involved he’ll make it more of a monster oriented series?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-McDonnell/868645580 Michael McDonnell

Edward Norton no longer interested in superhero roles and comicbook films.
