Transformers: Dark Of The Moon Coming Back To IMAX 3D Screens

Paramount isn’t happy with Transformers: Dark of the Moon. The movie itself has done fine, with almost $1.1 billion earned at the worldwide box office. The problem is, that’s roughly $150 million short of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which is the summer’s big box office winner so far.

Emphasis on “so far.”

In what is probably an attempt to unseat the final Potter chapter from its top spot — and to earn a few more buckets full of money, if nothing else — Paramount has confirmed plans to re-release Dark of the Moon domestically at 246 IMAX locations. The re-release will run for two weeks, starting Friday and ending the week after Labor Day weekend, on Sept. 8.

I haven’t been able to catch it yet — perhaps next week! — but the latest Transformers managed to earn a bit more critical praise than the detestable Revenge of the Fallen did. Its 36 percent Rotten Tomatoes score might not seem much higher than the second movie’s 20 percent, but critics were much kinder overall to Michael Bay’s latest Robots in Disguise outing.

That said, I’d hate to see Potter unseated by this re-release. It probably won’t happen, as the $150 million gap is just too wide for a two-week limited release — even a premium-priced one — to overcome, but my fingers are crossed all the same.
