Okay, one comment. Is it just me or does this feel like a giant “fuck you” to all the fans that ragged on that scene in Revenge of the Sith where Anakin wakes up for the first time as Vader and cheesily screams “Nooooooooooo!”?

Thought so.

I felt a great disturbance in the Internet, as if millions of fans suddenly cried out in terror and chose not to buy the Blu-ray edition due to more unnecessary, lame changes to the original movies.

Congratulations, Lucas, you just managed to drive away a lot of money!

  • mars

If they are changing dialogue then I hope they changed ‘Obi Wan once thought as you do’ to ‘Your mother once thought as you do’

  • DriftingKenshi

You just ruined my day…and probably my life too. =(

I don’t care. I only watch the original theatrical release versions anyway.

please say this is just a rickroll

  • Jeff Kraschinski

@nars I’m not unconvinced Obi-Wan as of Episode 3′s ending might have thought there MIGHT be a speck of good still left in Anakin, otherwise he’d have been more prone to just attacking Anakin after Padme chokes out instead of trying to reason with him. That said, your change makes more sense except for ONE thing. Vader would have no way of knowing Padme said he still had good in him as she died unless he received it via Jedi vision in a big deus ex machina.

  • Dyuken

I really don’t find an issue with this. Cheesy yes, but we should be used to it by now. lol

  • loserface

I’m on the fence. Overall I don’t mind the changes Lucas has made over the years (end of the day they’re his films to do with what he wants, I can’t tell you how many times I wish I could do the some to stories I’ve written.) But the lack of an option for the originals in pristine blu-ray condition I think is the mistake; give people the option and everyone will be happy.

  • Scud

Apparently Lucas will never learn. I guess this is something he couldn’t have added in all those years ago? He’s trolling the world at this point.

  • Mak

Um…. I think he can afford to do what he please.
Not to mention he’ll find a way to make his money.

  • nailsin

Does George Lucas egg his own house too?

  • 0bsessions

Ugh. I just…I’ve managed to look past every change. The Boba Fett voice change, the Hayden in the finale, I even learned to tolerate the existence of Jedi Rocks once DVD hit and I could just skip it easily, but this? That’s one of the trilogy’s best, most defining scenes (And probably my second favorite scene right behind the immediately preceding Vader/Luke fight in the dark) and that one line just really kind of kills it for me.

Did anyone happen to click on the link to the “new” Krayt dragon call? It can’t be real right? I mean it sounds like someone yelling into their microphone and then playing with it in some shitty sound editing program…

  • ATK

Hey Lucas! Do you think your getting any more of my money, Noooooooooo!!!!

  • Jmcreer

Sure he will… he’ll get all your money one way or the other.  You know it, I know it…. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

  • Jmcreer

Is this a big “FU” to the fans?  I doubt it.  If it was a big FU he’d never take the time and effort to update his film to make it appear as if it was shot in 2012 – he’d have just left it as it was and STILL take all your money!!!  Has he done that?  No.

I don’t see the problem.  If you want the original Star Wars films they’re available on DVD.  If you want the newer ones with updated CGI effects they’re on DVD as well.  If u want the even more updated Star Wars film they’re on Bluray.  And if u want to wait for the original 70s and 80s incarnations on Bluray…well.. I’m sure they’re just around the corner.

Is Lucas screwing you all over.  Maybe if he was holding a gun to your heads and forcing you to buy the Bluray, sure.  But he’s not – so stop whining and bitching and worry about something that REALLY matters.

I had the videos, I had the updated videos. I got the DVDs.  I got the original Star Wars on DVD without the CGI effects added or extra content.  Eventually when I see them on sale I’ll get the Bluray as well.  No one’s forcing me to, no one’s forcing you either.  Fucking get a grip.

  • Cjorg2

Learn what?  Put your hand up if you’re in charge of a billion dollar empire.  Anyone?  Anyone?  Lucas can, and will do whatever he wants to do.  His success shows he knows what he’s doing.

  • Cjorg2

Actually it was only four fans.  Everyone is too busy queing at JB Hi-Fi to preorder the Star Wars Bluray editions to cry out in terror.

Drive away a lot of money?  Sure, if history has proven one thing it’s that NO ONE ever buys anything Star Wars related. Never.  Lucas is on the street now with a tin, a cardboard box, and a sign begging for money.  Poor guy.

  • mars

Padme said to Anakin/Vader ‘You’re a good person, don’t do this’ which I think qualifies.

  • Scud

Just because someone can do whatever they want doesn’t mean they should. How long will it be until we get the original cuts on Blu-ray? Put your hand up if you think it will be in the next five years, because I’m thinking it won’t be.

  • Mars Bonfire

It’s no different from what Bob Dylan has been doing for the past 40 years. Bob has an interesting relationship with the hard core fans, the Dylanologists. Bob loves to re-arrange his songs and lyrics when on tour just to goad and frustrate the fans. Why? Because he can and no matter what he does, Bob knows the fans will always pay and come.

  • Scud

    Hi George!

  • http://twitter.com/morph1138 Ron

I love how you are so critical of other peoples opinions, but think for a moment. If someone reworked or changed a story or film that you are passionate about, how would you feel then?
In regards to the screwing you over comment, yes he is screwing his fans over. Think about it for a minute, without the original Star Wars (before it was A New Hope, I’m talking when it was just plain old Star Wars) where would he be? The fans who paved the steps up to Skywalker Ranch are the fans who Lucas is taking the most away from. The people who bought the toys and begged their parents to take them again and again. Those are the people he is disrespecting with this.

Don’t forget Star Wars is a movie on many ”most-influential of all time” lists, including the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry. There it is listed as “Star Wars (1977)”, not “Star Wars: A New Hope SE (1997)”, and there is a reason for it. To me it is not only a fuck you to his fans, it is also a fuck you to movie history.

  • Cjorg2

Then watch your original cuts on DVD instead.  If you really want to be a purist you wouldn’t even get the originals on Bluray because they wouldn’t contain the grain of the original print anyway!!!!  No HD around in the 70s and 80s!!!

  • Jmcreer

Thank you for loving my post.  You flatter me : )

Did you not read my post?  I am one of those fans that love Star Wars.  I have all the different versions on Video, DVD, even decades old ones I taped off from the TV.  Hell, I even had an audio cassette I used to listen to in the car before video was widely available.  So I would quite happily call myself a “passionate” Star Wars fan.  Acting in a histrionic manner over little changes to Star Wars doesn’t make you a more passionate fan or “purist”, as much as most would like to think so.

All I’m saying is if you don’t like the Bluray changes – well, use your brain and watch the originals he put out on DVD a while ago.  Any changes Lucas makes today, tomorrow, and in the future make NO DIFFERENCE to how much you like, or liked, the film!!!!!!  It doesn’t alter Star Wars’ place in film history or as a cultural phenomenon whatsoever.  And the only reason it’s a cultural phenomenon is how the franchise altered the film industry – certainly not in the actual product created.  I asolutely love Star Wars, but it’s no Citizen Kane, no Lawrence of Arabia, and is not deserving of some kind of “Holy Grail” status some fans seem to believe it deserves.  It is a flawed film.  A great, enjoyable, but ultimately flawed film that is loved by many on a purely emotional level that allows them to ignore all the flaws inherent.

And this is why Lucas is happy to tinker with the film franchise.  He doesn’t view it as the “Holy Grail” like the small minority.  Obviously, as the person who wrote, directed, and produced them he sees them for what he believes them to be.   IMO Lucas isn’t “f-ing” anyone by using his own companies money to update his films to stand up against other films being released today.  The only people who believe this is a vocal minority such as yourself who don’t reflect the opinions of the majority, let alone George Lucas.

If you want to nitpick, if you and other Star Wars “fans” were such “purists” you wouldn’t even get the Bluray (altered or unaltered) because the films were NEVER, EVER brought out on HD anyway and would be missing the film grain, not to mention the past audio qualities.  Putting the original film on to Bluray changes it just as much as adding “Noooo” to a scene that clearly stands out as as awkward as a film filled with furry little Ewoks.

Is Lucas screwing his fans over?  Only in their owns minds.  The vast majority are just fine with the updates and alterations.

Unfortunately, it was stated that the original cuts aren’t able to be released on blu-ray due to quality issues. Lame.
