NBC Nabs Romancing The Stone
NBC is looking to bring the 1984 action-adventure comedy Romancing the Stone to television in a series produced by 20th Century Fox Television and Shawn Levy and Marty Adelstein’s Laps/Adelstein Productions.
Deadline reports the network has bought an adaptation of the hit film, which starred Kathleen Turner as a romance novelist with a treasure map who heads to Colombia to ransom her kidnapped sister from bumbling antiques smugglers (Danny DeVito and Zack Norman), only to end up in the jungle where she’s saved by a bird exporter played by Michael Douglas. Adventure ensues as the two try to find an enormous emerald and make their way to Cartagena while avoiding DeVito and the murderous Col. Zolo. A sequel, The Jewel of the Nile, followed in 1985.
The Forgotten creator Mark Friedman will pen the adaptation, with Levy (Night at the Museum) set to direct if his schedule permits.
The series will take an adventure-of-the-weak approach, following a “successful but unfulfilled woman” who teams with an adventurer to take on missions while searching for her missing brother.
