NBC Nabs Romancing The Stone

NBC is looking to bring the 1984 action-adventure comedy Romancing the Stone to television in a series produced by 20th Century Fox Television and Shawn Levy and Marty Adelstein’s Laps/Adelstein Productions.

Deadline reports the network has bought an adaptation of the hit film, which starred Kathleen Turner as a romance novelist with a treasure map who heads to Colombia to ransom her kidnapped sister from bumbling antiques smugglers (Danny DeVito and Zack Norman), only to end up in the jungle where she’s saved by a bird exporter played by Michael Douglas. Adventure ensues as the two try to find an enormous emerald and make their way to Cartagena while avoiding DeVito and the murderous Col. Zolo. A sequel, The Jewel of the Nile, followed in 1985.

The Forgotten creator Mark Friedman will pen the adaptation, with Levy (Night at the Museum) set to direct if his schedule permits.

The series will take an adventure-of-the-weak approach, following a “successful but unfulfilled woman” who teams with an adventurer to take on missions while searching for her missing brother.

Liked the movie, but the tv show’s entire concept sounds sexist. She’s obviously got a successful career, but she’s unfulfilled because she doesn’t have a boyfriend? GMAFB!

First “The Blues Brothers” is being developed as a TV show, and now “Romancing The Stone”? I guess “The Goonies” is next as a potential new TV series adapted from a ’80s movie…

This one sounds worse then the Blues Brothers money grab…..er, I mean….series, that Ackroyd is trying to pitch. More and more Hollywood seems to be going to the 80s closet, dusting off something that was (halfway) decent and trying to repackage it into the next big money maker. I’m sure if we started a list we could come up with over a dozen ‘remake’ flops. I’ll even start it off….”Conan”.

Well, in every job I’ve had there has always been a number of women bemoaning the fact that they have no boyfriend, want to get married, and/ or want to have children. They certainly don’t sound 100% fulfilled. Is that sexist – sounds more like a reflection of society. Not everyone is you.

Weekend at Bernies!!! Weekend at Bernies!!! 22 episodes of shennanigans with a corpse! It sells itself. Willam Shatner could play Bernie!!!

Why can’t they do tv remakes of GREAT movies like Kidco?!!!? ;D

THERE’S a concept made for tv! A little kid (formerly played by The Toy childstar/later one time porn actor Scottie “The Toy” Schwartz) and his younger sister (the incomparable Cinnamon Idles from Sixteen Candles) start selling manure and get rich after their Kidco company takes off.
It’d be the Dallas of kiddie shows!!! RATINGS SHALL RISE WITH MORE FEROCITY THAN A LEGION OF BLACK LANTERNS!!!!!!
    YES I’m kidding. ;)

“ Adventure-of-the-weak ” haha…. Sounds like a fun reality show! Only the puny shall compete! ;)

Regarding the actual show – could be good. I loved the movie. We shall see.

This will work only if there’s the same level of chemstry between the two leads as there was between Douglas and Turner in the original movie. That would be a tall order.

was wondering how they planned to do romanacing the stone as a series.now find its going to be the team up to hunt for the main leads brother. that should work for a few seasons.

Sounds a lot like The River, except that this sounds like it’ll suck while The River sounds more intriguing.

why not make her ‘fulfilled’ as the adventurer who saves the idot man while he searches for his long lost brother? maybe he can be ‘fufilled’
