Fox, DreamWorks To Co-Finance Steven Spielberg’s Robopocalypse

Fox and DreamWorks are hammering out a deal to co-finance Steven Spielberg’s next film, an adaptation of Daniel H. Wilson’s new sci-fi thriller Robopocalypse, Deadline reports.

Spielberg acquired the rights to the novel in 2009, and committed in October 2010 to direct the adaptation as a follow-up to War Horse.

Cloverfield screenwriter Drew Goddard penned the script which, as the title suggests, chronicles efforts by the human race to survive a robot uprising. Like Max Brooks’ World War Z, Robopocalypse unolds as an oral history assembled from interviews and security-camera footage.

According to Deadline, Disney will handle domestic release while Fox will distribute the film overseas. It’s set to open in the United States on July 3, 2013.

Spielberg actually contacted the author Daniel Wilson after he had
written How To Survive A Robot Uprising. I read Robopocalypse, it was a
fun summer read, but I think he wrote it to be made into a movie.
Spielberg will make it sappy with a big orchestral score, but i’ll still
    go see it.
