Hannibal Lecter Series Brewing From Pushing Daisies’ Bryan Fuller

French film studio Gaumont will launch its international television division next month with a development slate that includes Hannibal, a one-hour drama from Pushing Daisies creator Bryan Fuller.

The drama will center on the early days of Hannibal Lecter, the brilliant psychiatrist and cannibalistic serial killer featured in the series of horror novels by Thomas Harris. Specifically, Hannibal will flesh out the backstory of the 1981 novel Red Dragon, with Lecter facing off against FBI profiler Will Graham.

Fuller (Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls) will executive produce with Martha De Laurentiis (Hannibal Rising, Red Dragon).

Los Angeles-based Gaumont International Television also plans to develop Madame Tussaud from The Borgias producer Michael Hirst, based on the new novel by Michelle Moran. The six-hour miniseries follows the rise to prominence of the wax artist during the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror.

A show about a serial killer? Sounds original.

You do realize that Lechter’s character predates Dexter by several decades, right?

Oh really? I had no idea. Hmm, maybe I should have read the article. “Specifically, Hannibal will flesh out the backstory of the 1981 novel Red Dragon, with Lecter facing off against FBI profiler Will Graham.”

Ignoring my abundant sarcasm, the point isn’t which came first, it’s which got where first. Dexter got to TV before Lecter. I’d be making the same point if a movie based on Dexter were announced. Unless they’re bringing some mighty twist to it, I can’t help but see this as an attempt to recapture Dexter‘s success.

I agree. But the BIG problem is how do you make a show that features a remorseless, evil serial killer as the main character? With Dexter, at least we can emphasise with his attempts to change and fit into society. In addition he only kills killers. Hannibal however is a depraved murdered who likes to eat people. It’s like trying to make a series about Hitler with him as the main protagonist.

They’d do better to make it about the Will Graham character with Hannibal as a recurring character similar in approach the “Red John” in the Mentalist.

The only reason Dexter exists in the first place is because of the success of Hannibal Lechter, so your attempt to brand a TV version of Lechter as nothing but a ripoff of Dexter is utter nonsense.

BTW, while your sarcasm may have been “abundant,” it wasn’t particularly clever or effective.

I agree. I had the same reaction a few years ago when they did the Hannibal “origin” movie, where they tried to give him a backstory that would somehow explain/justify what he became. There is no justification for what he does; the guy is a monster. There’s a limited amount of mileage you can get with such a character as a protagonist.

You say that like Hannibal Lecter was the first fictional serial killer. In my opinion, the only reason to bring him to television is to capitalize on Dexter. Which I said. And since it’s obviously my opinion, you’ve no right to call it nonsense. You can disagree and have your own, equally valid, opinion. That’s your prerogative. But take the stick out of your ass and learn some manners.

BTW, I don’t really care if you don’t like my sarcasm. It wasn’t for you. It was for me.

Also, in breaking news, there is more than one police procedural on television.

I don’t care if it’s an original concept, or “ripping off” Dexter, or whatever. It’s Bryan Fuller, creator of two of my favorite TV shows of all time. I’m there.

That doesn’t invalidate my point. Most of those are unoriginal too.
