Even as reports circulated Thursday that Monster‘s Patty Jenkins is being considered to helm Thor 2, a few details surfaced about what we might expect from the sequel. In short, it’s going be more epic in scope, drawing in more elements from Marvel’s Asgardian universe.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the rapidly developing film, which is being written by Don Payne, will “take Thor literally to other worlds.” Starring once again Chris Hemsworth as the god of thunder, the sequel will “primarily be the journey of that character, of he and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and how the new dynamic with his father (Odin, played by Anthony Hopkins) is working out, as well as what are the broader stakes for The Nine Worlds.”
As fans of Marvel comics, and students of Norse cosmology, know, the Nine Worlds are the planes linked by the world tree Yggdrasill: Asgard, home of the Norse gods; Alfheim, home of the Light Elves; Hel, realm of the dead; Jotunheim, land of the giants; Midgard, Earth; Muspelheim, home of the demons; Nidavellir, realm of the dwarves; Svartalfheim, home of the Dark Elves; and Vanaheim, home of the Vanir, a sister race of the Asgardians.
Thor, which opened in May, has grossed $447 million worldwide. The sequel arrives July 26, 2013.
