After punting with its first poster for Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol — remember the brooding, hoodie-wearing Tom Cruise? — Paramount Pictures steps up its game with the image for the IMAX release of Brad Bird’s live-action directorial debut. It’s kind of fantastic.

The IMF is shut down when it’s implicated in a global terrorist bombing plot. Ghost Protocol is initiated and Ethan Hunt and his rogue new team must go undercover to clear their organization’s name. No help, no contact, off the grid. You have never seen a mission grittier and more intense than this.

Produced by Cruise, J.J. Abrams and Paula Wagner, the fourth installment of the franchise also stars Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Paula Patton, Josh Holloway, Michael Nyqvist, Vladimir Mashkov, Lea Seydoux and Anil Kapoor. It opens in IMAX Dec. 16 in advance of a Dec. 21 wide release.
