INTERVIEW: Gail Simone Guides 'Blockbuster Update' of Red Sonja, Vampirella and Dejah Thoris
We all know the old Biblical quote “ask and ye shall receive,” but seriously now: who asked for this? FremantleMedia, the company that brings you American Idol and The Price is Right, has just acquired the rights to Universal Soldier with the intent of developing it as a TV series. Stargate and Sanctuary writer Damian Kindler will be working on the project for FremantleMedia North America, a press release reveals.
The sci-fi series, a first for FremantleMedia, will be executive produced by Allen Shapiro and Craig Baumgarten, who said the following in a statement: “We’ve long wanted to come up with a bold new way of updating Universal Soldier. We’re thrilled to team up with FremantleMedia and are sure that the millions of fans who loved the movie will now welcome it into their living rooms.”
The duo were also producers on the original film from 1992, a Roland Emmerich-directed production starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren as dead-then-resurrected super-soldiers. This will be the second Universal Soldier TV series, following an attempt in the late ’90s. There’s also a fourth movie in the series, Universal Soldier: New Dimension, set for next year, which brings back Van Damme and Lundgren as stars. There’s no word on how the TV show will tie in with the larger series mythology.
