First Look At Russell Crowe As Jor-El In Man Of Steel

We’ve already seen official and unofficial images of Henry Cavill as Superman, and even some snapshots of Michael Shannon as General Zod, but now we get our first look at Russell Crowe as Jor-El on the Vancouver set of Man of Steel.

The photos, which come courtesy of the Daily Mail, show the 47-year-old actor in a flowing robe and cape, with shoulder pads and the familiar “S” emblem on his breastplate. But beneath that outer garment we see glimpses of a tight-fighting bodysuit similar to those worn by Cavill and Shannon, right down to the basketball-like pattern.

Directed by Zack Snyder, Man of Steel also stars Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent, Ayelet Zurer as Lara Lor-Van, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Antje Traue as Faora, Harry Lennix as General Swanwick and Christopher Meloni as Col. Hardy. The film opens June 14, 2013.

Aragorn, Kal-El, you are my sons.  Please…stand together.

  • Jacob

I am becoming increasingly disinterested in this movie.

  • Jmcreer

I’ll be interested to see how this costume (uniform?) looks in the actual trailer and/or official pictures with the correct lighting etc.  I mean, if you judged Marlon Brando’s costume on the paper mache’ look he had without the correct lighting that would’ve been unfair.  The same goes for how lame Nolan’s Batman looks in the light of day, but how it works when properly lighted.

  • Jmcreer

I’m the opposite – I still think it’s great that we are still getting to see all these comicbook adaptations, and now Superman, especially with such an A-List cast.  I’m not blase’ yet.

  • Jacob

It’s not adaptations in general, just this specific one. Everything I see makes me less excited to see this movie. I’ll still watch it, and my opinion could very well change when the trailer comes out, but right now it’s a very big ‘meh” from me. The exact opposite is with The Avengers.

  • nik

LOL. He looks like a drunk old man at a costume party.

  • Pete Pfau

    So, like Russell Crowe, then?

  • Scarletspeed7

    Better than the Catwoman costume.

  • Youngshields

Like Marlon Brando when he played Jor El, then?

  • Anonymous

I Think as this is lit it will be white in appearance onscreen as with the original Marlon Brando suit.  He doesn’t have the regalty that Jor El should possess though.  That is my main concern as goes for Michael Shannon as Zod, just not got a finesse that a sociopath like Zod should have

Is this just a costume fitting or what? The hair doesn’t strike me as, I don’t know, alien. As for the costume itself, I want to see how it moves. Right now it looks like it would be highly impractical for any natural movemetn.

  • Zen Strive

A mix of kryptonian and medieval royalties. Nice.

  • Bret

“My name is Maximus Decimus Jor-Elius”

  • Jacob

Why should Jor-El be regal? He’s not royalty. He’s not even government. He’s just a scientist.

  • Michael Clifford

So no one else sees the makings of the Superman costume underneath the grey robes?

  • Kjny65

    I am not entertained.

  • Leon_bm1

The hilarious part of this isn’t even the picture at all. It’s the negative reaction. Or more or less the reasons behind the negativity. These same people b!+ching are the same ones that watch “Lord of the Rings”, “Star Wars”, etc. and yet this costume design escapes you? Lol! Ok.

  • Zach Benton

So, I take it that Krypton doesn’t explode in this version… Jor-El eats it on his 3rd trip to the galactic buffet.

  • Russell Crowe’s Thrown Phone!

You’ll believe fanboys can bitch! ;D

  • Cjorg2

… and he’d still kick your chubby fanboy ass without breaking a sweat.

  • Massimotriggiani

    AWESOME!!!!!!! can’t wait!!

  • Jason

Wow….and I don’t mean that in a good way.  Also, why is “Of” capitalized in the title?  Why are any of the articles capitalized?

  • David Fullam

  • Mak

Jor-El is indeed a scientist but his family (The House of EL) is very powerful and influential. I would probably compare them to nobility as opposed to royalty.

  • Mak

    probably wasn’t worth talking about… I suppose.

  • Joss Whedon is a hack

I don’t know what people are complaining about – I’d definitely tap that ass.  he’s a hunk!!

  • Jered Lacks

Russel Crowe is just not right for the part. He looks like he just woke up for work after a drunken night in Mystery, Alaska.

  • Simon Park622

I kind of hate seeing stuff like this before the movie comes out – but that’s the era we live in. I think the whole armoured look of Jor-El seems kind of weak, but it’s not going to stop me seeing this movie. No matter how weird it might look in these photos, that look might work in the context of the movie; it’s not giving me a lot of confidence in the thing, but it won’t make me refuse to see it, either.
