It turns out Paramount Pictures actually is serious about a Top Gun sequel, as Variety reports the studio is in negotiations with Thor and X-Men: First Class writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz to tackle the screenplay.
News of the project surfaced a year ago, with Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) writing and Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the 1986 original, on board. Although Tony Scott revealed at that time he’d be back to direct, Variety doesn’t seem so certain. Likewise, despite McQuarrie’s insistence that, “There is no Top Gun 2 in which Maverick is not the starring role,” it’s unclear whether Tom Cruise will return is some capacity.
Top Gun, which starred Cruise, Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards and Tom Skerritt, centers on hotshot young Naval aviator Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, who’s sent with his radar intercept officer to Fighter Weapons School, where he strikes up a romance with a female instructor and suffers a crisis of confidence after a fatal training accident.
Made for an estimated $15 million, Top Gun became the highest-grossing film of the year, raking in more than $340 million worldwide.
