Brad Bird Explains Why We Haven’t Seen an Incredibles Sequel Yet

Although fans have been clamoring for a sequel to The Incredibles since the animated adventure was released seven years ago, it’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about a potential follow-up.

Luckily, writer/director Brad Bird is making the press rounds for Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol, where he was asked why we haven’t seen that elusive Incredibles 2. It turns out it’s only because he hasn’t been pursuing it.

He tells that he and Pixar are on the same page when it comes to the sequel: They’ll only do it if Bird writes it. The trouble is, he hasn’t found the perfect story.

“I think the reason it hasn’t [happened] yet is because the studio would like me to do it, if there were another Incredibles,” Bird tells the website. “And I’ve told them that I’m not really friendly to have someone else take away my child. […] I would like to think that I have several good ideas that could be incorporated into a next Incredibles, but I don’t have a whole movie yet, and the last thing I want to do is do it just because it would open big, or something like that.”

Kudo, Mr. Bird.  Do NOT rush an inferior sequel!  I want another Incredibles as much as the next guy, but not at the expense of quality.

I appreciate and applaud his feelings about the sequel. But he is a very talented man and needs to put a thought about all of the fans awaiting a sequel. Also,Iron Giant is another of his beloved films that needs a 2nd movie. They are 2 of the best animated films ever and we want more.

Thank god for this dude having some integrity.

    Good thinking, don’t rush.

Hopefully he’ll find a good story, and maybe he can do Ghostbusters III.

Well stop fooling around with crappy Mission Impossible sequels and get to it!

So…. basically the same thing he’s been saying for ages?

  • Jacob

This is the only Mission Impossible he’s done.

Better no sequel than a shitty one. Pixar understands and that is why I love them.

  • Kwame

I’d rather no sequel than an crappy one (I’m looking at YOU Cars 2)

So you’re gonna tell me no one else could write another awesome story with these characters? I say get someone talented to write it and make the sequel. Just because Brad Bird doesn’t write doesn’t mean it will suck. I want a sequel with or without him.

Why does Bird’s quotes sound like they were translated from a foreign website?

I’m pretty sure he said something like this before back when the movie just hit DVD, which is why I was never expecting a sequel for this movie. I’m all for good movies that don’t need sequels anyway.
