Benicio Del Toro Wanted as Villain in JJ Abrams’ Star Trek Sequel

We still don’t know much about the second Star Trek movie from director J.J. Abrams aside from the fact that it will not be called Star Trek 2. However, Variety reports there is a tiny bit of new news, thanks to a source close to Abrams who says the filmmaker wants Benicio del Toro to play the bad guy.

While del Toro’s most recent big-screen outing The Wolfman was not only poorly received by audiences but also panned by the head of the studio, the actor still has acting chops and has built his career on playing morally questionable characters on both sides of the line between good and evil.

There’s no word yet on what character the actor would play, but he sure would make an excellent Khan, wouldn’t he? Whatever the character might be, expect a meaty role to match the efforts of the first movie thanks not only to the return of Abrams, but also screenwriters Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.

    He’d make a great klingon!  ;-)

Hopefully he’ll play a member of the Temporal Integrity Commission from the 29th Century as seen in Voyager, or the Department of Temporal Investigations from the 26th Century as seen in DS9. Any of those can punch holes through the “logic” of the first movie and put things back the way they were.
