Search Narrows for Actor to Play Bruce Willis’ Son in Die Hard

James Badge Dale

Twentieth Century Fox and star Bruce Willis reportedly are considering for young actors for the coveted role of John McClane’s son in A Good Day to Die Hard.

According to Deadline, the list has been narrowed to 31-year-old (Detroit 1-8-7, G.I. Joe: Retaliation), D.J. Cotrona 33-year-old James Badge Dale (The Pacific, Rubicon), 21-year-old Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games, The Expendables 2) and, as previously reported, 32-year-old Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad).

Set to shoot early next year for a Feb. 14, 2013, release, the John Moore-directed film sends McClane to Russia, where his estranged son is caught up in a daring prison escape of a rogue political leader.

It’s thought that the lucky young actor could inherit the billion-dollar action franchise from the 56-year-old Willis, who’s starred in four Die Hard films to date.

    AARON PAUL! AARON PAUL!

It’s such a perfect cast and would be a great follow-up to playing Jesse. He needs another strong, public performance to avoid typecasting.

let see,  DALE  IS  33 YRS. OLD – PAUL IS 32  AND  COTRONA IS 31 YRS. OLD.  THINK ABOUT  THIS,,, IF  WE  CONSIDER  ABOUT  BRUCE IN REAL LIFE’S  CHILDREN – EVEN THE OLDEST GIRL WITH  DEMI  MOORE, HER  AGE  DOES  NOT  COME CLOSE TO THE THREE  CONTENDERS ABOVE, SO IF THE CASTING PERSONNEL IS REALLY BEND  ON  MAKING  IT  REALISTIC MOVIE,  TO  HONOR  BRUCE  WILLIS – WHO  WILL  BE  THE PRIME/ LEAD  ACTOR  IN  THE MOVIE , THE  PERFECT  AND OBVIOUS  PICK  WILL BE  LIAM  HEMSWORTH, NOT TO  MENTION  THAT –  OF COURSE !  BRUCE  WILLIS  WILL HAVE  A  HANDSOME  SON  FOR THIS  SPECIAL ACTION  MOVIE!!! FOR BRUCE  WILLIS  IS  STILL  YOUNG  AND  HANDSOME MAN TOO !!!

let see, ACTORS FREQUENTLY PLAY CHARACTERS THAT AREN’T THEIR OWN AGE. PAUL COULD EASILY PLAY SOMEONE IN THEIR EARLY TWENTIES.

CONSIDER  THIS,,, MOST  PEOPLE,  REALLY  WANT  A MORE  REALISTIC  ACTION  MOVIE ,  SO  ALL  WE  CAN  DO  NOW  IS  TO  WAIT ….  HOWEVER,,, I’LL   STICK   TO  MY   PERFECT  AND  OBVIOUS   PICK    IT’S   LIAM   HEMSWORT….  SORRY…  BUT  YOU  HAVE  THE  RIGHT  TO  STICK  TO YOUR   PICK …  FRIEND…

Um hello?   BRUCE WILLIS  will be like 58  in 2013. so he can easily have a 30yrold son.

In Die Hard 1  (1988)  his kids were at least 3 yrs old.  Now add 25 yrs to that.

  • Omegasaga

Dude i hate that my 80s heroes are old men now but-  John McClane can easily have a 30 yrold son in Die Hard 5.

The original Die Hard will be 25yrs old in 2013.  How old wer McClaines kids in that movie?
    3-5 yrs old right?

Its not like The MUMMY 3 where the son was like 10 yrs young than the dad.
Heck Sean Connery was only 11 yrs older than Harrison in INDIANA JONES LAST CRUSADE.

Is that the real plot summary?

  • gie

I  HATE  TO  SAY  THIS ,BUT  I  THINK , AS THE PLOT  OF THE  STORY  GOES –  J. McCLANE HAS  SOME KIND  OF  A  HEADSTRONG / SPOILED  SON  AND THAT –  THEY HAD  SOME  DISAGREMENT  FOR  YEARS , SO  IF –  I MAY SAY , HE  CANNOT BE  30  YEARS OLD . WITH NO CONTACT WITH HIS FATHER  FOR LONG , GUYS, THE  ACTION OF A SON – INDICATES  IMMATURITY. THEREFORE,  A 30 YRS. OLD  AND ABOVE  WILL NOT BE THE RIGHT PICK … THEY ARE TOO MATURED, FOR SUCH PART OF A SON IN THE MOVIE , JUST  FOR  ME,  J. McCLANE  NEEDS  A YOUNGER  SON  FOR THE MOVIE. AGAIN, AS I INDICATED  ABOVE  LIAM  HEMSWORTH  IS  THE RIGHT  CHOICE  GIVEN  ALL THE CONSIDERATIONS. HOPEFULLY, YOU WILL SEE MY POINT REALISTICALLY…

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_McClane#Lucy_Gennero-McClane

Born in 1982, Lucy McClane is John’s daughter.

Born in 1984, McClane’s son appears briefly in the first film as a young child.

So, in 2013 the son would be 29. Hemsworth (21) is the farthest contender age-wise, with the others coming up in the following order, Cotrona (31), Paul (32), and Dale (33).

Winstead was two years older (born in 84) than the character she played.

Adding a son is a sure fire way to kill a franchise ask Harrison ford lol

Hmmmm maybe get Shia le bouf to do it ha ha ha ha!

I don’t get (besides the craving for money) why to continue the franchise without his real star. I’m tired of the “legacy” thing that Hollywood (and comic books) wants to sell us. There is only one true Batman: Bruce Wayne. There is only one true Captain America: Steve Rogers. And in the case of movies, I’m not interested in seeing Ghostbusters with “a new generation”. I’m not interested in “Rocky 7″ with and apt pupil of Balboa. I¿m also not interested in seeing Die Hard with the son of John McLane, or seeing Lethal Weapon remake, or Karate Kid with Jackie Chan, or Blade Runner sequel, Tron without Tron (Tron Legay was such a disappointment… and I’m not talking just about the “legacy” thing with Flynn’s son, I’m talking about Tron… He only showed ip like ten minutos of the movie. Seeing this movie was like watching the “Saber Rider” cartoon, because in this show the Saber Rider oly appeared at the end of the episode for two minutes or something like that), and I don’t wanna The Boondock Saints without Willem Dafoe, or Indiana Jones without Harrison Ford.

I like better new ideas, new heroes, new franchises, and not the same franchises with other actors or directors. It doesn’t work.

“not interested in “Rocky 7″ with and apt pupil of Balboa. ”

    That was Rocky 5.

Technically, the robot was not called Saber Rider, that was the pilot. The robot was Ramrod.

I agree 100%, this new “idea” by the film makers that if Indy only had a son we would suddenly continue to watch the films into perpetuity is simply silly.  The mummy was another similar situation.  If Die Hard 5 was called the son of John Mclane it would profoundly unpopular I for one prefer the idea that they simply accept that the character is older and different and continue to use them.  This is what they did in Die Hard 4.0 and also Rambo and it worked brilliantly in both of these films.
