CBS and Chris Columbus Draw on a Remake of The Rifleman

With the American Western on the upswing, CBS is teaming with Harry Potter director Chris Columbus to remake The Rifleman, Sam Peckinpah’s late 1950s television drama, Vulture reports.

Avatar and Shutter Island scribe Laeta Kalogridis will collaborate with Drive writer/director Patrick Lussier on the script for the pilot, which will be directed by Columbus.

Airing on ABC from 1958 to 1963, The Rifleman starred Chuck Connors as Lucas McCain, a widowed Union veteran of the Civil War who moved with his young son in 1881 to a ranch in New Mexico Territory. There McCain, a crack shot with his trademark (if anachronistic) modified Winchester Model 1892 rifle, was frequently recruited by the local marshal to help protect the citizens of the town of North Fork.

They better not let Will Smith screw this one up.

It’s be TOTALLY neat if Will Smith is Lucas McCain and his son Jaden Smith is cast as Mark!

Oh, I really hope this takes, but they better do good with the casting. I’m a big fan of the original, and would hate to see it shamed by poor cast members.
