NBC Greenlights Munsters Reboot from Pushing Daisies’ Bryan Fuller

NBC has officially given Bryan Fuller’s take on The Munsters the green light, TVLine reports. The long-gestating reboot began life last fall when the network tasked Fuller with making a pilot that combined the aesthetics of Modern Family and True Blood. The powers that be at the time weren’t happy with the results, but a regime change led to the pilot getting a second look.

Fuller began his career writing for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Voyager before producing shows like Wonderfalls, Dead Like Me and Pushing Daisies. His unique take on genre-esque shows tends to lead toward the surreal and fantastic, which would seem to be a perfect fit for a new version of the Munsters. Fuller’s Hannibal Lecter TV series also just got picked up by NBC, so he’s going to be one busy guy.

The Munsters ran on NBC from 1964-1966, resulting in a whopping 70 episodes. Herman Munster, a Frankenstein monster, married a vampire named Lily and had a werewolf son Eddie (not sure how that works out, genetically speaking). Lily’s dad, Grandpa, lived with them, as did niece Marily, a normal young woman who also happened to be very attractive. The series got a late-’80s extension thanks to The Munsters Today and has had a series of TV movies.

Whether the world was screaming for another TV reboot remains to be seen, but one with a clever new take would be a welcome addition to the television landscape.

They pass on Wonder Woman, but give the go-ahead to the Munsters?

    Okay, right.

Unlike the Adams Family TV show, where the characters and actors were stale, Fred Gwynne and Grandpa Al Lewis made this show work.

Fuller was the glue that held Heroes together when he left it fell apart. I believe that if NBC had fired Tim Kring and had hired Fuller as the show runner it would still be on the air.

Perhaps the Munsters pilot wasn’t complete crap.

It be cool if they played up the fact that Grandpa is Dracula.

I like this. I like this very much.

  • Bass Guitar Hero

Perhaps the Wonder Woman pilot wasn’t complete crap either.

  • DonC

No, Wonder Woman was complete crap. I’ve seen it.

  • Bass Guitar Hero

That’s your opinion. I’ll reserve my own judgment.

I’ll watch this just to see what a cross between True Blood and Modern Family would look like.
