The Lone Ranger Rounds Up Cast, Takes Aim at Tom Wilkinson

Slashing about $45 million from the budget of The Lone Ranger was only the beginning of the struggle to put Disney’s derailed Western back on track. Now director Gore Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer are busy reassembling the supporting cast so the film can start production in February.

Deadline reports Disney has already sealed a deal with Ruth Wilson (The Prisoner, Luther) to star alongside Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer, and is now focusing on veteran actor Tom Wilkinson to play the villain Latham Cole.

According to the website, Disney is also negotiating deals with Barry Pepper, Helena Bonham Carter, Dwight Yoakam, who initially entered talks in July, as well as James Badge Dale.

The Lone Ranger rides into theaters May 31, 2013.

Ruth Wilson was the chick from both The Prisoner and Luther? I’ll be dipped. She’d be great sassy belle in a Western…

  • Really?!

Wait, who’s playing Tonto? Please not Johnny Depp. Why can’t Hollywood do this correctly? First Akira and now this?!

What happened to Butch Cavendish as the main villain?  He was the responsible for the deaths of the Lone Ranger’s brother and the other Texas Rangers.

I love Tom Wilkinson – but he’s ALWAYS the villain!  Can’t we get someone less obvious for a villain once in a while?
