Doctor Who to Lose Companions Amy and Rory Next Season

The Doctor has been known to go through plenty of companions over the past 48 years, but that doesn’t make it any easier to accept when favorites move on from the world of Doctor Who. The BBC announced just today that Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill), the married companions of the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith), will be leaving the long-running sci-fi series at the end of next season.

Executive Producer Steven Moffat made the announcement alongside Smith after a screening of this year’s Christmas special The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe. Moffat didn’t go into any detail, but he did say the Doctor will be getting a new “friend.” The next season of Who will run for 14 episodes, all of which will feature Smith in the lead role. More details will be revealed as the season nears production.

    No more Karen Gillan?
Guess that means that Moffat will have to wrap up all Amy Pond sub-plots from the 5th & 6th series by the end of the 7th.

Wasn’t Matt Smith also talking about leaving after next season?

Well to be honest they have run their course a bit. I don’t really know where there is to go with their plot now except fixing it so they somehow get to bring up River as a child, since there’s still a big missing chunk of her life between regenerating in the 60s and resurfacing as Mels in, what I guess, was the 80s. They have been the best companions since the series return, none of this falling in love with the Doctor BS either.

I’m guessing this season will see the Doctor part ways with the Williams, for real this time, and the final date with River, leading into the library episode in order to clear the slate for whatever massive event is planned for the 50th.

I heard that they would actually be leaving through the middle of next season, not the end. And I’ve got to say, I don’t really mind at all. 2 and a half seasons of the Ponds is a nice length. Hell, Rose only stuck around for 2 seasons. So when Amy leaves, she be leading the pack.

I’m actually looking forward to who will be coimng on next!! My dream come true would be Donna for another season!! Sally Sparrow would be another great choice, even as a one off episode. But Moffat speculated that it could be a man, woman…. or alien!! Now that would be fun!! :)
