One Block to Rule Them All: Lego Lands Hobbit, Lord of the Rings

Get ready for all kinds of new construction on Middle-earth! No, there’s not a Hobbit-related real estate boom, but there is today’s announcement that Lego and Warner Bros. have worked out an agreement for the Danish building-block maker to create sets and minifigures based on the Lord of the Rings trilogy and both upcoming Hobbit films.

Lego has yet to reveal which sets will be available when, but it has launched a website for the property that promises a summer release. The pairing makes perfect sense considering how important so many locations are to the plots of J.R.R. Tolkien’s books-turned-movies. Expect everything from Bilbo’s house to Mount Doom to make an appearance, as well as the whole gamut of characters in Lego’s signature minifigure format. This deal could also potentially lead to a brand new series of games in the Lego video game library considering they’ve teamed up with Warner Bros. in the past to create games starring Batman and Harry Potter. Needless to say, there’s a lot to look forward in the coming years for Tolkien fans!

I’m holding out hope for a “to-scale” Lego Battle of Helm’s Deep, but I don’t think there’s enough little plastic bricks out there to match my geeky fever dreams.  I’ll almost certainly snatch up the inevitable “Lego LOTR” and “Lego Hobbit” games when they hit the X-Box though. :)

I eagerly await my Bridge of Khazad-dûm set, complete with adorable little Balrog. Many evenings will be spent yelling “You shall not pass!’ at my little block men.
