Two New Avengers Stills Arrive

On the heels of yesterday’s German trailer for The Avengers, Marvel has released two stills from the Joss Whedon-directed film showing Iron Man in flight, and Thor and Captain America in battle.

Marvel Studios presents in association with Paramount Pictures Marvel’s The Avengers – the Super Hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel Super Heroes Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins.

Opening May 4, The Avengers also stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man,  Mark Ruffalo as the Incredible Hulk, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, Cobie Smulders as Agent Maria Hill and Stellan Skarsgård as Dr. Selvig.

How many ways will Whedon end up coming up with to have Chris Evens and RDJ take off or lose their masks and Tom Hiddleston and Chris Hemsworth take off or lose their helmets?  Maybe he should consult with Sam Raimi and Toby Maguire.

Personally, that wouldn’t bother me in the slightest. It is really hard to translate superhero costumes to the big screen without making them look silly, so if he wants to lose that distraction, I can understand why. So long as there is some establishment early on that they actually have masks, just to maintain a little consistency with the comics.

Cap’s Avengers costume seems to be one of those movie outfits that looks so much better in action than in promo content. I feel it looks kind of hokey in a lot of the posters, but stuff like this makes it look awesome. I love this shot.

Completely agree!! As soon as I saw this picture I thought that.

Cap’s belt is what Batman’s utility belt should look like, but no movie, even Nolan’s have ever gotten that right.

  • RunnerX13

I don’t see Bane or Batman in either of these pics.

  • RunnerX13

don’t reeally care about Thor’s helmut, he only wore it for one scene in his own movie, but Cap without his mask is like Batman without his cowl,

  • LightningBug

I’d like to see Cap actually reach into one of those many pouches for something useful during this movie to justify the bizarre trend pioneered by Jim Lee and Rob Liefeld in the 90s. It amazes me that it endures to this day. What does he keep in there?

…it does look pretty cool though.

    I don’t care about the masks…

Cap uses his mask less and less in comics lately, and anyway, wolverine didn’t used a mask in the X-Men movie, and it was ok!

So, it’s just a little detail, more even since secret identities are a past thing in the Marvel universe (yep, Spidey is the only one!)

  • Joe Louis

There’s  no Thor and Captain America here. It’s just two duffuses named Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth

Honestly, I doubt it’s any harder than translating ancient Roman soldier battle helmets in period films. As long as it’s well constructed and competantly directed, there should be no problem. No one thinks the masks worn by the baddies in “Star Wars” look silly.

I think Marvel was getting us ready for a maskless Captain America with the whole Steve Rogers series of books during the Bucky Cap era – which is what the Chris Evans pic here really reminds me of.
