Paramount Pictures announced that principal photography has begun in Los Angeles on Star Trek 2, the 3D sequel to director J.J. Abrams’ blockbuster 2009 franchise reboot.
The studio also confirmed that Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve and Peter Weller will join returning stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Anton Yelchin and Bruce Greenwood.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the estimated 12-week shoot will take place in the L.A. area, primarily on a sound stage at Sony Pictures Entertainment. An earlier report indicated Hawaii might stand in for a jungle planet, but it’s unknown whether that’s actually the case.
The previous Star Trek film cost about $140 million to produce and went on to gross $383 million worldwide. Star Trek 2 opens May 17, 2013.
