The Artist, The Descendants and Homeland Lead Golden Globes
The Artist, The Descendants, Homeland and Modern Family led the 69th annual Golden Globe Awards, presented Sunday by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The Artist, director Michel Hazanavicius’ French romance set during the decline of silent cinema, was the night’s big winner, taking home three awards, including Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy.
The comedy-drama The Descendants also received a boost in the Oscar race when it was named best drama, with star George Clooney earning a best actor nod. Meanwhile, in the television category, Showtime’s thriller Homeland picked up two trophies, one for best drama series and another for best actress, for star Claire Danes. And after three nominations in the category, ABC’s perennial favorite Modern Family won its first Golden Globe for musical or comedy series.
The Adventures of Tintin, Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson’s adaptation of Herge’s beloved comics, was named best animated film, while Martin Scorsese was honored as best director for Hugo.
Two other winners that may be of particular interest to SPINOFF readers: Peter Dinklage followed up his Emmy win with a Golden Globe for best supporting actor for HBO’s Game of Thrones; and Idris Elba of Thor, The Losers and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance fame was named best actor in a miniseries for BBC One’s Luther.
