Don’t Believe All of Those Avengers Villain Rumors, Kevin Feige Says

Rumors about the villain, or villains, in The Avengers have been nothing if not persistent. First it was the alien Kree and Skrulls. Then it was Loki. Then it was Thanos. Then it was Loki and the Skrulls. Then it was Loki and the Skrulls, only they aren’t being called Skrulls. And most recently, the Red Skull was seemingly thrown in for good measure.

It’s all so, so confusing. Luckily, though, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is there to clear things up. Kind of. In the new issue of Empirethe one in which you’ll find those new Avengers images — he’s asked directly about the Skrull and Red Skull talk:

“Who said they were aliens?” he teases. Beings from the Nine Realms, then, ventures Empire? “Closer…It’s not Skrulls, I’ve been clear about that. Beyond that, we want to hide it. The identity of the alien race is not impactful. It exists in the comic books, but we’re not setting up the Kree-Skrull war or anything like that.”

“Was Skull vaporised at the end of the movie, or thrust into another realm?” asks Feige. “That remains to be seen. It would be fun to see Skull in future, but he’s not in this one.” Whedon though is a little more circumspect when Empire confronts him. “I do have a comment on that,” he says, before pulling a move worthy of Loki himself. “It’s…oh, you’re breaking up!”

So definitely no Red Skull, but there is, as most everyone has long believed, an alien threat in the film — just not the Skrulls. The reference to the Nine Realms throws a bit of a curve, though: Is Loki mustering the forces of Muspelheim or Svartalfheim? Demons and Dark Elves would technically be alien.

Directed by Joss Whedon, The Avengers stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as the Incredible Hulk, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, Cobie Smulders as Agent Maria Hill and Stellan Skarsgård as Dr. Selvig. It opens May 4.

Can someone ask Whedon why Cap’s not wearing his mask in any of the shots released thus far? Come on now, you’re a fan, Whedon. Don’t pull this shit on us.

  • Big H

Who cares? Everyone knows he’s Steve Rogers. Maybe they couldn’t make a mask that looked good.

  • Doctor Timebomb

This summer, cinema’s biggest villains are…the Dire Wraiths!

  • Wonder Down Under

Who cares. We’ve seen shots of Cap really scraped up. It’s not too difficult to surmise that the mask gets torn off in some way during the melee. Plus, they want face time for the pretty boy. It’s Hollywood. Concessions must be made.

And, of course, while we can relate to a masked character in the comics, that’s a little harder in a live action movie. Just as long as Iron Man keeps his mask on..!

  • Demoncat4

so if the aliens are not the skrulls or kree. could it be the externals making their debute.or just the kree. and red skull should be saved for captain america two like he is in the cosmic cube.

  • Anyone

Because the mask looks kinda funny on screen, that’s why.

  • Anyone

    Whats an external?

  • Living Tribunal.

For that matter, why are they ashamed of Thor donning his winged helmet? I think it would look great!

  • RichardW

    Space Phantoms

  • Thanos

ITS THE BADOON! Im telling ya, they are doing a Guardians of the Galaxy movie and will want to introduce them in Avengers.

Also, remember seeing a small crashed ship in photos online that looks like the hover boards the Badoon fly in Silver Surfer #1!

If not the Badoon Id like to see Thanos’s rag tag army of space scum! Then you could showcase a whole bunch of species like Kree, Skrull, Badoon, Shi’Ar, Rigellian, Dire Wraith etc.

  • Magnusjragnarok

I actually thought that, today. Might be a bit too scary for the little ones, though.

    Was that a serious question?

Oh wait… The other guy said “externals” 1st…

    My bad.

  • Anonymous

    The opposite of an internal.
    Eternally yours,
    Me

Maybe a quick guest appearance by Rom? And throw in the Micronauts for good measure.
    ;-)

Smoke screen to hide the fact that it really will be the Skrulls?

  • Anonymous

Considering early Avengers history with Loki, you could be right.

Feige – “The identity of the alien race is not impactful.”

Does anybody else find that to be a VERY odd statement?

Spinoff – “Is Loki mustering the forces of Muspelheim or Svartalfheim? Demons and Dark Elves would technically be alien.”

The only thing that doesn’t work for me with that is the obvious technology that we’ve seen in the set picks. This is tech savvy alien race, which really wouldn’t fit any of the Nine Realms as we know them. Heck, even Sif and the Warriors Three road on horses to the Bifrost.

find out more about real Scarlett by typing Scarlett Johansson clone in Google search bar and you would see much more then in The Island movie..

This is what I was thinking, as well.

Iron Man’s serves an in-story purpose. It helps him control the suit.

    Don’t forget NFL Superpro!

  • MsMarvelorSpiderWoman

Hopefully, it’s the Kree because it’ll be a great way to introduce and launch their Captain Marvel/Ms. Marvel franchise.

  • Lord Prong

He wore his helmet a lot in the Cap movie so I expect he’ll wear it just as much in the Avengers. However, most of the pics I’ve seen him sans helmet look the likely result of him losing it in battle.

Wait, alien invasion? So the Avengers are coming together for the same reason the JLA did?

  • Kdev511

Couldn’t the alien race be the Chitauri? The Skrull like aliens from the first Ultimates series?
