Jason Segel Won’t Star in Disney’s Muppets Sequel

Walter, Mary (Amy Adams) and Gary (Jason Segel) arrive in Hollywood in "The Muppets"

Hot on the heels of the announcement that Disney is working on a sequel to The Muppets, Collider reports that star and co-writer Jason Segel won’t be returning for the follow-up. Previous reports indicated that Segel wouldn’t be collaborating with Nicholas Stoller on the script, but his total lack of involvement in the sequel is certainly news to fans of the movie franchise he was instrumental in relaunching.

“It’s true [that I won't be in the Muppets sequel] but it’s totally amicable,” Segel told Collider. “My goal was to bring The Muppets back and I did that leaving them in very good hands, my writing partner and James Bobin the director. I did what I set out to do, and now I wanna pursue more human-related projects.”

The How I Met Your Mother star went on to say that he’s open to returning in some capacity, but that, after spending five years working on the original movie, he just needs some time away to work on other projects.

Too bad, his was a wonderful performance and the movie as a whole was a delight to this old Muppets fan. I certainly understand the want and desire to persue other project and hope Segal will continue to bring his energy to many more movies (he says hoping for a 3rd film in the Forgetting Aldus Snow saga)

Speaking as a Muppets fan, this was an awful movie. It had none of the charm of the old series and even less comedy. Segel’s probably making a good career move by not having anything to do with the sequel.

It was a good film.  You have no taste or sense of humour.  Gonzo should stick a grenade up your ass.
