Tim Miller to Helm Adaptation of Warren Ellis’ Gravel

Legendary Pictures has tapped visual-effects wizard Tim Miller to direct Gravel, based on the horror comic by Warren Ellis and Mike Wolfer, Deadline reports. Co-founder of Blur Studio, which worked on Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World and created the title sequence for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Miller is also set to helm Fox’s long-discussed Deadpool movie.

Published by Avatar Press, Gravel follows Sgt. Major William Gravel, a British SAS soldier and combat magician who uses his skills in the dark arts to moonlight illegally for paying clients. Legendary optioned the comic in 2009 for release through Warner Bros.

Although it was originally announced that Ellis would pen the first draft of the adaptation, Unknown screenwriters Oliver Butcher and Stephen Cornwell have been brought on board to tackle the script.

“Note that this film has writers who aren’t me,” Ellis wrote this morning on his website. “I can’t say a lot more than that without giving some stuff away, but some of you will remember that the original plan was for me to write this film. Plans changed and expanded, and I was working on other things both announced and rumoured during the initial process on this film. My relationship with Legendary has grown since we made the initial deal a couple of years ago. All is good. And I’ve known Tim for years. This is basically the best news.”

Ellis will serve as an executive producer, with Rick Alexander producing.
