21 Jump Street Tops Box Office

It’s not much of a surprise that 21 Jump Street came in No. 1 at the box office, as it not only received positive reviews but faced virtually no competition in its first weekend. Box Office Mojo reports the Fox comedy, which stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as young-looking cops who go undercover at a high school to bust a drug ring, grossed $35 million.

Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax came in second, dropping down a spot from last week, but still raking in $22.8 million. The laboring John Carter took the third spot with $13.5 million. The site reports that, worldwide, the Disney adventure has brought in $179.3 million, still short of the reported $250 million budget.

I think Disney needs to look at the bigger picture. One, they did virtually NOTHING to promote ‘John Carter’ over here (I am not sure about overseas, but then again, other countries’ seem to have been taste in movies than we do on this side of the Atlantic!). Two, the worldwide ticket sales are doing great – which indicates that there is some kind of demand for the 2nd book, ‘The Gods of Mars’ to be made. But, we all know how Disney dropped the ball with C.S. Lewis’ “Narnia” series, so I am sure they will do the same with the Barsoom books. FAIL, House of Mouse, FAIL!
