Hunger Games Reaches $251M,
Defeats Wrath of the Titans
Surprising no one, The Hunger Games dominated the North American box office in its second weekend, grossing an additional $61.1 million and leaving the competition in the dust. Lionsgate’s adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ bestselling novel has raked in $251 million domestically in just 10 days, which The Hollywood Reporter contends is a record for a non-sequel.
Wrath of the Titans, the 3D sequel to Clash of the Titans, opened at No. 2 with $34.2 million, a mere shadow of the $61.2 million brought in by its predecessor two years earlier (granted, Clash of the Titans opened on Good Friday, giving the first film a holiday-weekend boost). However, Wrath of the Titans performed better overseas, banking $78 million and besting The Hunger Games.
Relativity Media’s Mirror Mirror, the first of two Snow White adaptations opening this year, brought in a disappointing $19 million, falling short of predictions. Still, the studio remains hopeful that kids will be drawn to director Tarsem Singh’s brightly colored comedy during spring break.
