District 9 Star Sharlto Copley
Offered Oldboy Villain Role
District 9 star Sharlto Copley has been offered the role of the villain in Oldboy, director Spike Lee’s remake of the South Korean revenge thriller, Variety reports. He would join Josh Brolin and Elizabeth Olsen in the Mandate Pictures film.
Based on the manga series by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi, Oldboy centers on a man kidnapped and held captive for 15 years with only a television for company. When he’s suddenly released, he sets out to discover the identity of his captor and the reason for his imprisonment, only to find that his kidnapper has even worse plans for him. Director Park Chan-Wook’s original film, released in 2003, won the Grand Prize Jury Award at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.
Copley, who also starred in The A-Team, is in early negotiations to play the mysterious billionaire out to destroy the life of Brolin’s character. He’ll next be seen with Matt Damon and Jodie Foster in Elysium, the science fiction film that reunites him with District 9 writer/director Neill Blomkamp.
Oldboy features a screenplay by Mark Protosevich (I am Legend, Thor). Roy Lee and Doug Davison (The Departed, The Grudge) will produce, with Protosevich co-producing. Mandate President Nathan Kahane will executive produce.
