Avengers Shot One More Scene After Film’s World Premiere

Even as the stars of Marvel’s The Avengers walked the red carpet Wednesday for the world premiere, they apparently still hadn’t finished work on the highly anticipated film.

“We are shooting one more scene … tonight,” Robert Downey Jr. said the next day at a press conference. “Not kidding.”

But, hey, it’s Robert Downey Jr. He’s not really serious, is he? That’s what director Joss Whedon insisted, telling Movieline, “He’s Robert, of course he’s kidding.”

Not so fast, Whedon. Mark Ruffalo backed Downey’s comment, confirming to The Playlist that, “We’re shooting a scene tonight. I’m not sure exactly where it’s gonna go. All I know is that someone came in with the costume and said, ‘Here’s some wardrobe. We don’t know where you’re going to be or what you’re doing.’ ”

Asked whether the scene will appear in The Avengers when it opens in theaters (as opposed to, presumably, a Blu-ray/DVD bonus feature), Ruffalo said, “Yeah. So I’m like, ‘All right, when are we doing that?’ Today after we’re done.”

As The Playlist notes, it’s not uncommon for Marvel wait until the last minute to shoot the post-credit stingers, withholding them from critics and preview audiences. However, while Chris Evans and Samuel L. Jackson were reunited in New York City for the final scene of Captain America: The First Avenger two months before its release, Whedon & Co. seem to be cutting it a little close:  The Avengers opens in Australia in less than two weeks.

Opening May 4 in North America, The Avengers stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as the Incredible Hulk, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Clark Gregg as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson, Cobie Smulders as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Maria Hill and Stellan Skarsgård as Dr. Selvig.

There is no way a film with a cast as big as pictured here(and I realize Whedon and some others, not cast members, are in the picture) could be a viable franchise money wise. This thing is a bigger dinosaur than Justice League will be.

Considering it’s effectively wrapped and seeing release in a couple of weeks, I don’t think it’s going to be as rough in the goings as Justice League was.

It’s a big but cost controlled cast. Think of it like a small market sports team:
Marvel locked up the bulk of the actors for multi-film deals BEFORE they were big time movie stars strictly to keep costs of the franchise down. The only actors in this who were big names before Marvel got to them were Jackson and Johansson. Evans, Hemsworth and to an extent even Downey were all relative also-rans when Marvel scooped them up. The whole process was a HUGE gamble (If any one of the lead-up films was a big dud, the whole thing falls apart), but it was a gamble that paid dividends.

Note that the only star of one of the Marvel films that was huge before the Marvel films is no longer around (Norton).

This film is going to turn a massive profit, no question.
