SDCC: Marvel's "Doctor Strange" Combats "Death and Pain" in New Trailer
Comic Books, Film
It’s been nearly two years since Samuel L. Jackson first lent credence to rumors of a S.H.I.E.L.D. movie, a project that Dum Dum Dugan actor Neal McDonough later suggested should begin production after the sequel to Captain America. Now, while promoting the May 4 release of The Avengers, Jackson seems a little more evasive about the possibility, and genuinely surprised that some fans want a Nick Fury solo movie. But he definitely has some ideas what a S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff might look like.
“I’m not a writer — I am a comic book fan, I know what I’d like to see, but I don’t know what they want to present to people,” Jackson tells MTV. “You know, how much they want to expose of S.H.I.E.L.D. in that particular way. […] We’re not superheroes, we’re more of a shadow world, so it would be more like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy with good toys. Maybe, y’know, closer to a Bond movie than a superhero movie.”
However, Jackson, who’s already appeared as Fury in five Marvel movies, is more certain that a S.H.I.E.L.D. movie wouldn’t merely be a solo outing for his character.
“Natasha’s part of S.H.I.E.L.D., Hawkeye is part of S.H.I.E.L.D., so I couldn’t do a S.H.I.E.L.D. movie without those two people, because they’re essential elements of what’s there,” he said. “Now we know Agent [Maria] Hill is an essential element of S.H.I.E.L.D. so she would have to be there. And I’m still not sure if she’s the eyes and ears of the council hanging around inside their place and telling people, ‘We’ve got these superheroes over here!’ She wants my job, I can tell. She’s ambitious.”
Curiously, he didn’t mention the fan-favorite Agent Phil Coulson, played by Clark Gregg.
Opening May 4, director Joss Whedon’s The Avengers also stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as the Incredible Hulk, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Clark Gregg as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson, Cobie Smulders as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Maria Hill and Stellan Skarsgård as Dr. Selvig.
